Hardback. Condition: Good. No DW. 1st Edition. Text commences at title page and consists of 16p then pages 4-411 and 17 (index, ads). There is a stub of paper where pages 1-2 might have been but copy online of British Library book does not have this leaf. No worm after page 80. The second part of the text was printed on an inferior paper which has slightly browned but there is noticeable browning to pages 209-212. not affecting legibility. Bound in old full leather with rsied bands. Some brown stains to edges of endpapers and first and last few leaves. All joints and hinges worn and/or cracked but covers holding well by strings. Lacking the original title label but pale brown panel beneath has stamped title still legible. ?Contemporary armorial bookplate of Townley featuring their arms (Argent, on a fesse sable, a cinquefoil or, in chief three mullets of the second) in wreaths of flowers etc but not their name. Unbound. Condition: Good. First edition. A very scarce first edition pamphlet published in the period in which English society realised that the Popish Plot was a fictitious threat. ESTC Citation No. R36286. Wing C1558With the register [1], A, B-C2. Collated, complete.A very scarce pamphlet regarding the Popish Plot, a fictitiou…s conspiracy that gripped England and Scotland in anti-Catholic hysteria between the years 1678 and 1681. English priest Titus Oates fabricated the existence of a massive Catholic conspiracy to assassinate King Charles II, which led to the execution of over twenty innocent men. This work begins with the disclaimer that, upon a return from London, the author has been 'almost persuaded [.] that there is no such thing as a plot; and I really do very much question it, or at least as to a Popish one'. This scarce first edition, arranged in the form of a dialogue, purports to be between an 'Old Queen-Elizabeth Protestant and his Country Neighbour', presents the argument for the veracity of the plot, and an opposition to this view. Unbound, as issued. Discolouration and some residue to head of front and rear leaves. Edgewear to page perimeters. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age toned, with handling marks throughout. Faint ink numbers to head of each leaf. Good. None (illustrator). book.
