John Lorimer fue un cmatemático y cartógrafo del siglo XVIII, con un interés particular por el magnetismo terrestre. En este volumen describe su "aguja magnética universal", cuyo prototipo fue construido en 1864 por Jeremiah Sisson. El instrumento midió tanto la dirección horizontal como la caída del campo magnético terrestre. La aguja nunca fue popular probablemente porque era demasiado elaborada.
