A brief educational booklet for patients advertising the patent medicine Fellows' Compound Syrup of Hypophosphites, a mixture of iron, quinine, strychnine (yes, the poison), lime, manganese, and potash (i.e. potassium chloride). Includes brief descriptions of pneumonia, influenza, malaria, whooping cough, and diphtheria. Defends the use of strychnine "with proper caution" (p. 16). Includes a lovely Art Nouveau-style illustration of a lamp on the upper cover. Single vol. (7.75" by 5"), pp. 16, secured in original illus. green wrps with white silk cord. Just in time before Truth in Advertising - The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 prohibited the sale of misbranded or adulterated food and drugs in interstate commerce and laid a foundation for the nation's first consumer protection agency, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Fine. An unusually bright and clean copy, with only the most minor discoloration to upper wrapper.
