"The Hanging Girl" would otherwise grade "fine," and the text is complete (including "Acknowledgments") at 504 pp., but previous owner has torn out most of the final page, which featured a one-paragraph biography of author Adler-Olden (duplicated here to jacket rear flap), thus reducing the grade of the first title here to "fair-to-good." The sixth "Department Q" novel, about a small group of misfit Danish police detectives who undertake to solve old crimes from closed case files. As usual, Adler-Olsen builds an intricate and compelling account, his detectives unsnarling decades of hidden human frailties, crimes and deceptions. Of course, like most modern detective writers in Western Europe, the author is stuck building his plots in a world where even the cops don't carry guns, and the appearance of even a single firearm in someone's hand (they're usually used to commit suicide) calls for much fretting and hypothesizing about where on earth such a an unlikely object may have come from. (Thus, nations whose ancestors terrorized half the known world from their long ships now sit wringing their hands, waiting to be conquered . . . yet again . . . by the latest group of hairy, uncouth invaders.) But the author turns this to his advantage, kind of, by having his officers continually kidnapped, bound and gagged, while the villains commit their mayhem with snowplows, electric cables, what have you. Modest doses of sadistic torture (OF the officers, of course -- never BY them) also intervene. 504 pp., as mentioned above. "The Hanging Girl" reduced from $16. In our second Adler-Olsen title, "Conspiracy of Faith" (ISBN 978-0-525-95400-2, a "fine" book in a "near-fine" jacket), a has-been Copenhagen cop put out to pasture working dead cases finds a message in a bottle from two kidnapped children. . . . 504 pp. Second title also reduced from $16, the two Scandinavian police procedurals now combined into a lot to consolidate shipping charge; both titles for the one price of $10.50.
