Quarter Leather. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very good copy in new quarter leather binding with raised bands to spine and title label and gilt date, and marbled boards. Complete with 8 fold-out plates, and decorative head and tailpieces. A continuation of Robert Boyle's work on gases published in 1660. He was a significant experimental physicist, best known for the formulation of Boyle's Law in 1662. It is now known that this also drew on work by Richard Towneley and Henry Power who has been working on the study of gases from 1653. Their work was affected by Boyle's 1660 publication and they completed their experiment in 1661, forwarding their results to the Royal Society who passed it on to 'interested persons' including Boyle. Boyle credited Towneley with the discovery, but the published equation was Boyle's and became Boyle's Law. This work is an update on Boyle's continuing experimentation. The plates depict the single barrelled air-pump Boyle and Hooke devised. Plate V demonstrates Boyle"s experiment of sucking water using his pump to the top of the Sheldonian Theatre in Oxford. Boyle worked hard to devise improvements on Otto von Guericke"s air pump or vacuum chamber. His end result was the "machina Boyleana" or "Pneumatical Engine" which was finished in 1659. His account of the work was in the first publication "New Experiments Physico-Mechanical". This is a continuation from that original work. This continuation was written, as Boyle states to the preface, because he had "promis"d a Second part of it, or a large Appendix to it" ESTC reference no. R34411. Disbound. Externally, sound, with minor ships to the extremities. Internally, held by one cord only at page 6. Otherwise, the work is firmly bound. Pages are bright. Occasional ink inscriptions to the margins.
