FIRST EDITION. TP + iii = Preface + v = Contents + 1-92, Octavo. First Edition. "The purpose of this monograph is the development of a new approach to the study of inductive methods; they are methods for determining the degree of confirmation (or probability in the inductive sense) of a given hypothesis on the basis of a given body of evidence. It is shown that from any method of this kind we can derive a method for estimating unknown magnitudes (here restricted to frequencies). In distinction to "deductive" logic, where there is practically general agreement on method, in "inductive" logic we find a great variety of incompatible methods. They are here incorporated into an infinite system of possible methods, called the continuum of inductive methods." (Carnap, Preface, p. III).First edition of very scarce early Carnap title on inductive logic, which greatly influenced later philosophers of logic. Original blue publisher's wraps. Spine ever so lightly sunned. There are traces of a light pen scribble to the bottom section of the front cover. Light pencil to the title page. A lovely copy of this rare work. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST.
