Cloth. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. This 6" X 9", 83-page offering in VG condition is Contracting As a Profession by Frederic W. Lord, published by Richard R. Smith in 1949. Not an ex-library copy, I am relatively sure that this offering is a First Edition, for what it might be worth. Still sound/firm for its…62 years, there is some modest yellowing of volume's endpapers front and back as well as the pages of text, and a band of very light spottiness along the top edge, and down the right-side edge, of the front cover piece. From author's Preface, "The Professional Plan which is outlined in this book is based on the principle that equitable and just treatment of the contractor by the owner is the surest guarantee of efficient, expeditious and economical work. The Professional Plan avoids the objectionable features of lump sum, competitively awarded contracts, and of cost-plus contracts, while combining the best features of both. It embodies a guaranteed outside price, one hundred percent credit to the owner on all savings, and a reasonable pre-agreed profit, with the same rate applying to all changes and extras. It achieves speed, flexibility, and cooperation on the part of all concerned in the building operation, and the highest quality of work. .In the view of many prominent architects, engineers, industrialists and bankers who have studied the Professional Plan, it will benefit owners, the public and everyone in the construction industry. In the pages which follow the plan will be discussed and analyzed as it effects all those involved. My incentive in writing this book is to help serve the industry to which I have devoted the study of a lifetime." "All those involved" would be entities such as the architect, consulting engineer, general contractor, subcontractor, small contractor, manufacturer, banker, organized labor, government, and, how the Professional Plan stacks up against the (at that time) Sherman Act. In fact, ten out of the fifteen chapters in which this offering is presented explain how the Plan impacts/works with the just-named ten entities. Interesting stuff for a wide range of folks, to be sure. And, it would be interesting also to see how much of what the author is trumpeting is acceptable/workable in today's construction/building framework. Thank you!.
