Hardcover. Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. Very uncommon title published from the Library of the Anglo-Catholic Theology. Decorative green boards. Boards present but detached; spine cover missing, pages dusty with soiling and age toning. Frontis engraving of Overall. John Overall (1559-1619) was the 38th bishop of the see of Norwich from 1618 until his death one year later. He had previously served as Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield (from 1614), as Dean of St Pauls Cathedral from 1601, as Master of Catharine Hall (under protest) from 1598, and as Regius Professor of Divinity at Cambridge University from 1596. He also served on the Court of High Commission and as a Translator (in the First Westminster Company) of the King James Version of the Bible. The Library of Anglo-Catholic Theology (published by John Henry Parker) was a series of 19th-century editions of theological works by writers in the Church of England, devoted to significant Anglo-Catholic figures. It brought back into print a number of works from the 17th century, concentrating though not exclusively on the Caroline Divines. The publication of the Library, from 1841, was connected with the Oxford Movement which had begun in 1833; some of the editors, such as William John Copeland and Charles Crawley were clearly identified with the Movement.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Hardcover (no jacket) in good condition. Edgewear and sunning to the hardcover; bumped leading corners. The spine has nicked and frayed ends and splits to the sides. College label and a few pen marks on the front pastedown. The frontispiece (of the Bishop John Overall) is partially detached from the binding; the rest of the pages remain sound. Occasional foxing throughout. All text is clear. CM. Used.
