First edition, 8vo, pp. xi, [1] 286; frontispiece and 11 plates; original pictorial red cloth stamped in gilt, t.e.g.; spine slightly sunned and with a small indent; all else verry good, bright, sound, and clean. Fielde was a multi-talented scientist and missionary. She travelled to China following her fiancé, but… upon arrival learned that he had passed away. She subsequently spent 15 years in China, doing missionary work and producing a dictionary of Teochew before returning to the US. In her book she covers broader topics such as Taoism and Confucianism, but also ethnological and legal matters including the role of woman in society.
