Fielde was a multi-talented scientist and missionary. She travelled to China following her fiancé, but upon arrival learned that he had passed away. She subsequently spent 15 years in China, doing missionary work and producing a dictionary of Teochew before returning to the US. In her book she covers broader topics such as Taoism and Confucianism, but also ethnological and legal matters including the role of woman in society.
