The author, an American Baptist missionary and scientist who resided in Swatow for some fifteen years and was fluent in Chinese, provides a sympathetic account of life, customs and beliefs in rural southern China at the time. Illustrated with a dozen fine and charming watercolour paintings in the Chinese style (tissue guard for one illustration missing). Clean ex-lib with usual marks on spine, front and rear paste-downs; perforated lib. stamp on title page. Front hinge cracked but remains strong. First edition, 8vo, pp. xi, [1] 286; frontispiece and 11 plates; original pictorial red cloth stamped in gilt, t.e.g.; spine slightly sunned and with a small indent; all else verry good, bright, sound, and clean. Fielde was a multi-talented scientist and missionary. She travelled to China following her fiancé, but upon arrival learned that he had passed away. She subsequently spent 15 years in China, doing missionary work and producing a dictionary of Teochew before returning to the US. In her book she covers broader topics such as Taoism and Confucianism, but also ethnological and legal matters including the role of woman in society.
