At the time, a charge of adultery was one of the few courses of action available to him, and so the government introduced the Pains and Penalties Bill of 1820 into parliament, aiming to strip Caroline of the title of queen and dissolve her marriage, and charging her of committing adultery with a low-born man, Bartolomeo Pergami. Even during the trial, the queen remained immensely popular, as witnessed by over 800 petitions and nearly a million signatures that favoured her cause.Collated, lacking all seven engraved plates.
