Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback. Dust Jacket. 8vo. pp. [vi], 104. Original publisher's blue cloth spine lettered gilt. Blue illustrated dust jacket lettered dark blue and gilt. Presentation copy:'26.6.91. To Ian my gorgeous friend. Hope you like this. Love Sarah', followed by a Sydney fax number. Eleven handwritten signed letters from Sir Ian Gilmour to Sarah Key. The first two written on personalised headed notepaper from the House of Commons, London SW1 0AA (address crossed out and Ferry House written in Gilmour's hand on the second letter) dated 19.7.91 and 12.1.92 and consisting of about 230 and 150 words. In the first letter Gilmour thanks Key for the book and says, 'I think it is very good indeed. I am not sure how much I enjoyed it. It is too poignant, perhaps, for anything as relatively simple as enjoyment. But it is certainly gripping and exceptionally well-written.' He goes on to say he would have liked it to be longer, 'a very rare feeling indeed.' The second letter refers to Key being a 'star' as the BBC had approached her about a series which subsequently came to nothing. Gilmour refers to 'a long eigthteenth-century book' that is being published and mentions another book he hasn't finished on Thatcherism. A third letter written on headed House of Commons notepaper (crossed out) and addressed from Ferry House, Old Isleworth, Middx. dated April Fools Day 1992 and consisting of about 170 words in which he says he struggles with faxes and gives news of his publications and offers his help regarding a problem (a reference to financial difficulties between persons at Weymouth Street where Key practices when in the UK). The remaining letters, one on House of Commons notepaper (crossed out), two addresses handwritten from Ferry House as above and the rest on House of Lords notepaper vary in length from one to two sides dating from 1992 to 1999?, a couple are undated, they cover more news of Weymouth Street (which Gilmour keeps an eye on), Gilmour's holidays in Italy and Scotland and his writing and publications as well as the odd mention of the government and the Royal Family. One handwritten letter from Sarah Key to Sir Ian Gilmour written on headed notepaper from "Wistonville" 10 Wiston Gardens Double Bay, N.S.W 2028 Australia dated 19.11.'92 and consisting of about 300 words in which Key explains her hefty initial charge for treatment which she has charged Gilmour's son who was not notified about it in advance as the appointment was made the day after she had met him. She praises the Gilmour family and reminiscences about a day she failed to turn up for tennis years ago and Gilmour was cross. 5 faxes from Key to Gilmour dating from 1991 to 1994 chatty about Australia, the BBC series, his books and the bush fires. Sir Ian Gilmour (1926 Ğ 2007) was an editor, writer and a Conservative politician. He was a so-called 'wet' who opposed Margaret Thatcher and who was sacked as Lord Privy Seal in 1981. Sarah Key is an Australian physiotherapist who divides her time between Australia and the UK. She has many eminent clients including some of the Royal Family. She suffered the loss of her son Freddie to cot death when he was ten weeks old. She and Gilmour were old friends. Very good. 0434383708 Very good. Signedes.
