L'auteur, bourguignon, fit carrière dans l'administration préfectorale et connut la postérité en servant de modèle à Alphonse Daudet pour son Sous-préfet aux champs. Bonapartiste fervent, il se détourna de la politique à la chute de l'Empire, et redevint l'homme du monde, le voyageur et l'habitué des salons à la mode, sans pour autant abandonner la plume. Son livre le plus connu est La Côte d'Azur, et il fut à l'origine de cette dénomination puisque c'était la première fois que ce nom était donné à cette région. Tirage non précisé. Exemplaire portant sur le premier feuillet blanc un affectueux envoi autographe signé de l'auteur. Exemplaire en partie débroché, petite déchirure au bas du dos de la couverture.

Mark Beard's brilliant illustrations of these "two-dimensional and ironic" characters, in their bathing suits and sunglasses, in saturated primary colors and his flat presentation, are overwhelming in their impact of the characters' vapidity. With such illustrations as Greek temple caryatids folding out to reveal the Cote d'Azur and paper doll players, Beard's art inexpressibly moves the viewer to realize the inevitable crush of the dragon of these pitiable self-centered creatures.
