(title within decorative floral border gilt), [iv] (preface and introduction) + 15 lithographic plates + 19 pp. text explaining the steps with illustrative diagrams + [i] (blank) pp. With 15 attractive lithographic plates on dark ivory ground, most with tissue guards, illustrating couples performing various dances, titled as follows: Salon des Cours de Mr. Laborde after A. Faivre; Les Fleurs; Les Ronds, No. 3; Les deux Dames présentées; Le Coussin; L'Eventail; Le Colin Maillard assis; Le Chapeau; Le Mouchoir; Les 4 Coins assis; Les Ronds, No. 1; Le Moulinet; Les bras levés; Le Rond; and Le Rond déployé. Binding slightly worn and soiled; some spotting to margins; joints tender; contemporary signature to front pastedown endpaper partially erased. Foxing throughout, primarily to blank margins of illustrative plates. Another edition of the present work was published in Paris by Heugel at about this same time with seven pages of music for the dances described.

Danse de salon créé vers 1820 qui fit fureur à la fin des bals, principaux lieux de divertissements mondains de l'époque, le cotillon mêlait jeux de société et danses ; composée de plusieurs figures (les fleurs, la chasse aux mouchoirs, le ruban, les cavaliers, etc.) et d'accessoires, elle pouvait durer jusqu'à deux heures et davantage selon le conducteur du cotillon. 19 pages de textes expliquent dans l'ouvrages les figures du cotillon. Exemple, le chapeau : Le cavalier conducteur remet à sa dame un chapeau et forme autour d'elle avec plusieurs cavaliers un cercle en tournant rapidement. La dame met le chapeau sur la tête du valseur qu'elle choisit. La plupart des danses reposaient sur la polka ou la valse. Publisher's cream and gold boards, covered with glazed moiré paper. Top headcap pushed in. Soiling. Corners slightly bumped. Good copy. A ballroom dance created around 1820 which became wildly popular at the end of balls, the main venues for fashionable entertainment of the era, the cotillon mixed parlor games and dances; composed of several figures (the flowers, the handkerchief chase, the ribbon, the cavaliers, etc.) and accessories, it could last up to two hours and more depending on the cotillon leader. 19 pages of text in the work explain the figures of the cotillon. For example, the hat: The leading cavalier gives his lady a hat and forms a circle around her with several cavaliers, turning rapidly. The lady places the hat on the head of the waltzer she chooses. Most of the dances were based on the polka or the waltz. Due to the proximity of the dancers, the cotillon was an excellent means of discreet flirtation. *.
