Hard Cover. Photograph album of 30 leaves, containing 32 large, annotated photographs relating to the H. M. S. Courageous. There are 2 photographs to a leaf with the final 14 leaves being unused. Bound in a black quater straight grained morocco and olive green cloth with gilt spine titles and fillets. Minor wear, mainly to spine… tips and edges. One leaf is slightly loose but still attached. Photographs are securely attached, bright and free of fading. Overall Very Good. Fascinating collection capturing the inter war period of the H. M. S. Courageous. Beginning June 1928, after her conversion into a aircraft carrier, the album records Blackburn Darts, Fairley Flycatchers, and Fairley IIIFs, in flight and forced sea landings, including the fatal crash of Lieutenant Nicholson. Other photographs offer a glimpse into the social life on board, such as the H. M. S Courageous football team winning the Battle Fleet Knock out Shield. As well as the Courageous herself, the album contains photographs of her half sister ship, the H. M. S Furious, and the H. M. S. Vendetta. On the 17th of September, 1939 she was struck by torpedoes and became the first British Warship to be sank by German forces. 519 of her crew lost their lives.
