First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First Edition. London, John Lane The Bodley Head, [1916]. Quarto, [56] pages in colour, comprising a few preliminaries and a double-page spread for each letter of the alphabet (a humorous verse facing a charming illustration), plus pictorial endpapers (with the inner surfaces of the free endpapers integral to the text). Quarter cloth and colour-pictorial papered boards slightly rubbed and bumped at the extremities; light erasure to the front free endpaper; a fine copy. Wartime nursing staff feature in many of these well-executed and appealing illustrations. A couple in which they do not appear are more than topical: 'C is for Canada / gallant and true / whose sons make the Huns / look decidedly blue', and 'L are the Lads who / by playing the game / have made the word Anzac / a glorious name'. The book went through at least three editions; this would appear to be the first.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. 6-panel primer containing 4 pages of woodcut images for each letter of the alphabet; 3 versions of the alphabet in different typefaces and numbers printed on covers. Printed on thick stock. A rare American ABC book that pays to the so-called "Battledores" (German: badminton racket). The name comes from the original shape of a wooden disc with a handle, which allowed a dual usability: "In school it was used for teaching children the alphabet, while out of school served as the battledore in the game of shuttlecock and battledore" (Rosenbach). The battledore of folded cardboard was probably invented around 1746 by the London publisher Benjamin Collins and emerged from the widely used in England "Hornbook" (see Tuer 405). It enjoyed great popularity in this form, especially in the USA. The present Battledore proves already by its illustration to the alphabet (only 24 letters, without J and U) as a direct descendant of British role models.

The condition of the book is VERY GOOD. Only one copy located on OCLC/WorldCat (Randolph College). EXCEEDINGLY RARE; and a truly beautiful book.
