Condition: Fine in a fine jacket. Dust Jacket Condition: dj. First printing. Signed limited first edition of this second book in The Border Trilogy, which follows the harrowing coming of age of Billy and Boyd Parham in the deserts of New Mexico. Known for his "brutal and spare" narratives, Cormac McCarthy has been called "one of the greatest living novelists" (Cowley, THE GUARDIAN). THE CROSSING is the second book in McCarthy's Border Trilogy, which follows the lives and hardships of Billy and Boyd Parham as they discover themselves in rural New Mexico on the eve of WWII. Critically praised, with reservations (as Sara Mosle noted in THE NEW YORK TIMES, "the most complex and sympathetic female character in the trilogy may be a wolf"), McCarthy's bleakness of vision and his cascade of mythic imagery still hold great power. 8.5'' x 5.5''. Original black cloth-backed boards. Original unclipped ($23.00) color pictorial dust jacket. Red topstain, fore-edge machine deckle. 296 pages. Signed by McCarthy to limitation page. Trace toning here and there. Else sharp and clean. Signed.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First editions, first printings. Laid into the first volume is an Autograph Note Signed from Cormac McCarthy to Nicholas Potter: "Nicholas | Thank you for your very nice letter. I appreciated it and I'm glad that you liked the book. I was in Santa Fe very briefly a couple of months ago but you were not in. Hope to catch you next time. | Cormac." Each volume in the trilogy is signed or inscribed by McCarthy in black ink on the half-title page: All the Pretty Horses is inscribed "For Nicholas Potter | All the very best from | Your friend | Cormac McCarthy"; The Crossing is inscribed "For Nicholas | With all best wishes | Your friend | Cormac"; and Cities of the Plain is signed: "Cormac McCarthy." 301; 425; 291 pp. Three octavo volumes [22 cm]. Black cloth and paper-covered boards; titling and author initials gilt-stamped to spines and front covers. Publisher?s brown and red topstains to volumes 2 and 3; volume 1 unstained as issued. First edition clearly stated on each copyright page with no additional printings listed. All three original pictorial dust jackets present with prices intact. Housed in a custom nesting slipcase by Robert Wang of Denver, mirroring the dust jacket design. All three volumes and dust jackets are in uniformly Near Fine to Fine condition; bright, sharp, and square with only the faintest signs of handling. Significant association copies, with each volume inscribed or signed by the notoriously reclusive author to his long-time friend, the late Santa Fe bookseller Nicholas Potter. Throughout a friendship spanning forty years, Potter?s bookstore served as a frequent destination for McCarthy, where the two shared a rapport rooted in their mutual appreciation of literature, art, music, and history. Accompanied by the laid-in Autograph Note Signed, this set represents a vital fragment of that connection; McCarthy, who famously avoided public life, inscribed most of his published works to Potter. Prior to 1992, McCarthy?s commercial success was minimal; none of his previous novels sold more than 5000 copies in their first printings. The breakout success of All the Pretty Horses?which won both the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award?transformed him into a mainstream literary icon. First print runs for the trilogy escalated dramatically, rising from 20,000 copies for the first volume to over 200,000 for the trilogy's conclusion. The work remains a cornerstone of contemporary American literature. A sweeping saga of the vanishing American frontier, the Border Trilogy unfolds across the sprawling Texas ranchlands and the rugged sierras of northern Mexico. The narratives follow John Grady Cole and Billy Parham, whose paths eventually converge as they encounter a world modernizing beyond their grasp. The cycle balances the romantic allure of a fading landscape against the resilience of those left in its wake. Taken as a whole, the work transitions McCarthy?s style toward a more accessible but no less profound lyricism, cementing his status as a definitive voice of the American West. Signed.

Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket photograph by Mario Ettlinger. Jacket design by Barbara de Wilde. Rare and desirable signed. First paperback edition of the second book in the author's acclaimed Border Trilogy. Octavo, original wrappers. Signed by the author on the title page, "For Randy, All best wishes, Cormac McCarthy." In near fine condition. Cover design by Chip Kidd. In The Crossing, Cormac McCarthy fulfills the promise of All the Pretty Horses and at the same time give us a work that is darker and more visionary, a novel with the unstoppable momentum of a classic western and the elegaic power of a lost American myth. In the late 1930s, sixteen-year-old Billy Parham captures a she-wolf that has been marauding his family's ranch. But instead of killing it, he decides to take it back to the mountains of Mexico. With that crossing, he begins an arduous and often dreamlike journey into a country where men meet ghosts and violence strikes as suddenly as heat-lightning--a world where there is no order "save that which death has put there.".

Attractive set of McCarthy's critically acclaimed Border Trilogy his first encounter with mainstream success after writing five novels between 1965-1985. Beginning with the publication of All the Pretty Horses, for the first time in McCarthy's career, his publisher poured a considerable amount of money into marketing the novel, with pre-publication copies in five formats (including an attractive signed advance in a folding case) produced and widely-circulated. Few signings events were done for the novel, after which McCarthy, publicity shy and committed to a private life, would seldom do public events or book signings, opting to sign sheets to be tipped-in to subsequent books. All the Pretty Horses won both the National Book Award and National Book Critics Circle Award in 1992, and served as the basis for Billy Bob Thorton's 2000 adaptation starring Matt Damon and Penelope Cruz.
