First edition. B&w photo, 23.5 x 18 cm, matted on stiff cardboard, 31 x 26 cm. This photo is taken from the 10 volume portfolio by Sylverster Baxter, rarely found complete, called The Spanish Colonial Art of Mexico. The text of only one volume was accompanied as illustration by nine volumes of actual photos of the buildings, etc., described. A detailed description of each photo was put on the back, with reference to the pages where it occurred in the text volume. Peabody did all of the photos. It is said that the publication of this collection inspired Limantour, Pres. Diaz' finance minister, to undertake a similar enterprise for the Mexican government, which he entrusted to Guillermo Kahlo, the photographer and father of Frida Kahlo. Very good.
