Book is tight, square, and unmarked but for school stamps on front and rear endpapers and the last three pages. Book Condition: Good+; shelfwear to head, tail, and tips; wear through fabric at tips; bookplate on the front pastedown with a student name. No DJ. Brown cloth boards and spine with black lettering on the spine and front board; Canterbury Classics Emblem on the front board in black. Frontispiece photo of the author. Clean internals. Inner hinges are sound and not split. 293 pp + 4 pp adverts 12mo. The text of this edition is a faithful translation of the 300th Italian edition of De Amicis' story, but some of the less important passages are omitted. Art nouveau decorations. Illustrated with black and white photographs of Italy and line drawings. This book was first published in 1886. Written as a diary, it follows eleven-year-old Enrico Bottini through his third-grade year in Turin, where he navigates friendships with classmates from diverse backgrounds. Through daily entries and monthly moral tales, the novel explores themes of compassion, family devotion, and Italian patriotism during the unification era. Each story presents different ethical lessons, from helping the poor to honoring one's country, creating a portrait of childhood shaped by social awareness and national identity. All 16 B&W photos are present. A clean very presentable copy from a ghost town school district in Kansas.
