The dust jacket is slightly toned, with handling marks and a couple of spots, but otherwise clean. The original price of 7/6 is present on the spine. The boards are sharp with the red lettered cloth and black borders. Some stains to the extremities. The text blocks are gently foxed and some internal spotting is present. This copy is free from inscriptions and is, overall, in very good condition. Scarce. A later novel by the forgotten author who has been likened to Thomas Hardy and Eden Phillpotts, due largely to proximity. Mary Patricia Susan Willcocks (1869-1952) was a Devon author through and through. She trained as a teacher but after her early novels gained a fairly considerable readership, it allowed her to write full-time. She was homosexual, spending much of her life living with a woman who might well have been her partner, and it might have been her provincial life, away from the hubbub of London?s literati, that explains her why her legacy dwindled into obscurity. This novel, published when the author had entered an unhappy middle-age, explores spiritualism in the Machen/Rabelais sense indeed, she was a translator and scholar of Rabelais.…
