Paperback. Condition: Good. Abandon the notion of subject-matter as something fixed and ready-made in itself, outside the child's experience; cease thinking of the child's experience as also something hard and fast; see it as something fluent, embryonic, vital; and we realize that the child and the curriculum are simply two limits which define a single process. --from The Child and the Curriculum In this single volume, readers will find two of John Dewey's insightful essays on education in America. He considered proper education to be fundamental to a functioning democracy. The problem, according to Dewey in The School and Society, with the old education model was that elementary schools did not encourage exploration and curiosity in their students. In The Child and the Curriculum, Dewey expands upon his definition of the ideal teaching method. A child's life, he says, is an integrated whole. A child will flow from one topic to another, taking a natural interest in subjects and dealing with a world of direct experience. School, on the other hand, addresses a world disconnected from a child's life. A more reasonable approach would be to strive to integrate their experience with the vast body of knowledge that society wishes them to know. By honoring the individual, both the student and the subject matter will come together in a process that produces a mature adult. American educator and philosopher JOHN DEWEY (1859-1952) helped found the American Association of University Professors. He served as professor of philosophy at Columbia University from 1904 to 1930 and authored numerous books, including How We Think (1910), Experience and Nature (1925), Experience and Education (1938), and Freedom and Culture (1939).…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Mindful School. Mindful Community.Reduced stress and anxiety. Increased focus and self-regulation. Improved academic performance. These are just a few of the many benefits of mindfulness, a scientific and skill-based program proven to help students in school and in life. McLean School, located just outside Washington, DC, is a nationally recognized and longtime leader in mindfulness education and knows just how transformative it can be for students and schools as a whole. McLean's mindfulness curriculum is rooted in research and years of experience, and includes a variety of activities and access points for all ages, from kindergarten through high school. Organized around the five tenets of mindfulness--breathing and body awareness, emotions, heartfulness and gratitude, listening and communication, and engagement of the senses--this guide addresses not only the what and the how, but also the why of mindfulness. With the right balance of information and inspiration, this book is a valuable resource for schools and individuals new to mindfulness education, as well as those looking to enhance an existing program. There's a lot to love about McLean's unique approach to mindfulness education, in particular how to make it part of the day-to-day school culture as opposed to a stand-alone program. It's part science, part common sense, and all about giving students valuable and lifelong tools for self-regulation and stress management.- Molly Love, MSW, LCSW, Lower & Middle School ParentMcLean tells us upfront: mindfulness itself is not hard, but creating a successful program takes effort. Based on years of experience and refinement, McLean's well-organized curriculum makes it easier with thoughtful, practical information that can be easily implemented at any grade level. I've been amazed by how quickly my students took to a mindfulness practice and what a natural fit it is with our whole educational approach. - Marie Marino, MS, Lower School Educator.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Blomberg presents an interpretation of essentially Christian schooling that challenges the conventional wisdom of both its advocates and critics. In asserting that education should teach students to be discerning of the worldviews that are operative in their own education, he strikes an important blow for the kind of Christian schooling he advocates, as well as puncturing the oft-held position that secular education is in and of itself values-neutral. He proffers the view that schools bringing their own values and beliefs forward in an explicit manner is the only authentic and honest way of proceeding. At the heart of this position is his final dismantling of the validity of disjoining theory and practice.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Since the birth of the republic, the aim of social education has been to prepare citizens for participation in democracy. In the twentieth century, theories about what constitutes good citizenship and who gets full citizenship in the civic polity changed dramatically. In this book, contributors with backgrounds in history of education, educational foundations, educational leadership, and social studies education consider how social education - inside and outside school - has responded to the needs of a society in which the nature and prerogatives of citizenship continue to be contentious issues.…

Paperback. Condition: Good. Young adult literature provides a mirror in which adolescents can observe themselves and their world with an ease and security that other kinds of texts fail to provide. It is a logical starting point for planning middle school learning experiences across the curriculum, but one that, up until now, has never fully been explored. Stover's book is designed to help middle school teachers develop concept-based, transdisciplinary units that reflect what we know about the value of students working together to construct knowledge and the value of putting young adult literature at the center of such a planning process. The author presents a process for planning transdisciplinary units, a rationale for using young adult literature, and an overview of teaching strategies that best reflect the synthesis of this evolving knowledge base. …

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The Common Core State Standards require all students to think in complex and creative ways and apply classroom learning in new contexts. Yet many teachers already struggle with reaching all learners, who come to school with varied levels of readiness, interests, and learning profiles. What to do now that the expectations are even higher? Differentiated instruction experts Carol Ann Tomlinson and Marcia B. Imbeau offer practical, thoughtful advice on how to plan, deliver, and assess instruction that meets this new level of challenge. Combining the goals of the Common Core with the principles of differentiation, the authors present an eight-step process to help teachers make rich, intellectually rigorous curriculum accessible to a very broad range of students. With examples across grade levels and content areas and a checklist for reflection on the eight steps, this timely publication will show you how to meet high expectations with responsive instruction and help all your students grow as thinkers and problem solvers.…
