A tight and fairly attractive first edition, with a unique autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Russell, 1p, 8" X 9½", Elmhurst, IL, 1956 July 21. Addressed to noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar Arnold Gates. Near fine. On letterhead of the "Standard Education Society," Russell discusses reviewing a book on Quantrill -- most likely for "Civil War Times," for which Gates was book review editor. "I took a somewat odd angle, for me, in the review," Russell notes. "If it doesn't hit you right, say so." Large full signature. Autograph material from Civil War scholar Russell (1899-?) is seldom encountered.

The author signed under his printed name on the title page. The entries are grouped as Soldier Maps, Warrior Maps, Civilian Maps, and Miscellaneous Maps. Besides maps, there are b/w photos and other illustrations. Endnotes; Bib.; Index. The pages top margins and some of the bottom margins are slightly wavy. This probably happened from the book being shelved upright instead of flat. The title page has a gift inscription written with enough pressure to dent the page and the dedication page. Two board corners are slightly bumped. Dust Jacket: The back panel has a little sheen loss from shelf wear rubbing. A crease line is on a corner of the back flap.
