Brown bevilled boards, the front lettered in gilt and black and illustrated in black; the original spine, lettered in black, has been professionally restored hence a vertical line down front panel parallel to spine. Internally original black endpapers. Internally colour frontis mounted on (foxed) page with gift inscription on reverse side. Intermitternt moderate foxing throughout, occasionally affecting the plates. Pp, frontis + 126. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Original Cloth. Condition: Near Very Good. First Edition. With 12 mounted chromographs. Decorative binding, now recased, with new endpapers.

First edition, square 8vo., pp.126, pictorial red bevelled cloth, lettered in gilt to front board, and pictured in black, with black lettering to spine, illustrated with 12 very attractive tipped-in chromolithographic plates, including frontispiece, one b/w illustration; contemporary ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper, a little light foxing to prelims, rubbing to extremities, with light wear to cloth at lower corners and at foot of upper joint, small spot of wear at headband, light marking to cloth, a very good, clean copy.

They form part of a collection of 31 tales, called the Buds and Blossoms series, published around 1853, retailing at a penny apiece. Some, if not all, are attributed to Hannah Ransome Geldart. Each story comes with a couple of illustrations. The other titles are: The Fir Tree's Story; The Fishermen's Children; Little Peepy; Rabbits and Peewits; Alice and Her Bird; Little Charley; A Doll's Story; The Faithful Dog; Spring and Summer; The Hero Without Courage; The Children's Visit to the Sea; Busy Bees; The New Ascent of Mont Blanc. Each story runs to 23 or 24 pages.The final leaf ot Mont Blanc is lacking. Some age browning throughout, but still quite sound and readable. Scarce. Size: 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall.
