L'ouvrage s'inscrit dans le contexte des mobilisations intellectuelles françaises pendant le conflit, où les récits du front mêlaient observation géographique et réflexion patriotique sur les territoires frontaliers. Il offre une perspective alsacienne rare sur les opérations militaires en Europe de l'Est. Papier bruni, rousseurs et tâches éparses.
