After finishing her BA, Wakoski moved to New York City, where she published her first poetry collection, Coins and Coffins (Hawk's Well Press, 1962). "In Contemporary Literature, Marjorie Perloff spoke of Wakoski's purpose in writing non-traditionally structured poems, saying that Wakoski 'strives for a voice that is wholly natural, spontaneous, and direct.
