First Edition
Softcover. Condition: Poor. First Edition. [heavily worn with extensive creasing to covers; the spine covering is almost completely gone, but it's holding together -- just barely -- because it was stitched, not perfect-bound; rubber stamp of Kier's Book House on front endpaper and title page]. (B&W photographs) The first issue of this long-running annual round-up of the year's films and personalities. In the beginning (and for another year or two, I believe) this publication was issued in both a dust-jacketed hardcover edition and as a softcover, this example being the latter -- as as noted, with the binding almost shot. The front cover features small portrait hotos of Joan Fontaine, Cary Grant, Joan Crawford, Clark Gable, Barbara Stanwyck, Katharine Hepburn, and John Lund. The volume contains the first of the "Portrait Dolls of Famous Film Folk" (by artist Mary Green) full-page photo feature (including dolls of Greta Garbo, Greer Garson, W.C. Fields, Bing Crosby); the "Promising Personalities" sections includes Mario Lanza, Ruth Roman, Scott Brady; the volume is dedicated to silent film actress Clara Kimball Young. Ordinarily I would just discard a book in this condition -- but, well, it was the beginning of a long-running and much-loved series, and I just haven't got the heart to chuck the poor abused thing out. So I've made it super-cheap, just to help it find a new home.
Condition: Good. Good condition. Acceptable dust jacket. Hardcover edition. Volume 13. (film, movie, history, 1962) A copy that has been read but remains intact. May contain markings such as bookplates, stamps, limited notes and highlighting, or a few light stains. Bundled media such as CDs, DVDs, floppy disks or access codes may not be included.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. (Volume 4) First Printing. (no dust jacket) [considerable wear to edges and extremities, light soiling and a vertical scrape on the front cover, binding a little loosey-goosey but all pages still attached; a good reference copy, but no more]. (B&W photographs) Provides cast/production credits for all films released in the U.S. during 1950. The "Promising Personalities" of the year were about evenly split between those who went on to really become something, and those who never quite did, with full-page photos of: Charlton Heston, Mala Powers, Marlon Brando, Gene Nelson, Faith Domergue, Rock Hudson, Debra Paget, Anthony (Tony) Curtis, Patrice Wymore, Nancy Olson, John Barrymore Jr. (very deliberately posed to evoke his famous father's profile), Jean Hagen, and Howard Keel. The second installment of the hideous "Portrait Dolls of Famous Film Folk" feature presents a group photo of doll versions of Fred Astaire, Joan Crawford, Rudolph Valentino, Carmen Miranda, and Harold Lloyd. The volume is dedicated to "Silent Screen Star and A Good Friend," Eugene O'Brien. (Oh, come on -- you remember Eugene, right? Hm?).

Hardcover. Condition: Good+. (Volume 5) First Printing. (no dust jacket) [solid copy, bumping to several corners, a bit of staining to covers; internally unblemished]. (B&W photographs) Provides cast/production credits for all films released in the U.S. during 1953. The "Promising Personalities" of the year, with the single exception of Audrey Hepburn, proved to be, on the whole, a pretty undistinguished bunch: Byron Palmer, Lori Nelson, Biff Elliot, Steve Forrest, Kathleen Hughes, Charles Drake, Pat Crowley, Elaine Stewart, Carlos Thompson, Edmund Purdom, and Barbara Ruick. This year's "Portrait Dolls of Famous Film Folk" (thankfully confined to a single page) gives us a group shot of dreadful doll versions of William S. Hart (looking a lot like Conrad Veidt in CALIGARI), Clara Kimball Young, Pearl White and Paul Panzer, Mae Murray and Bob Hope. The volume is dedicated to Lillian Gish.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good-. (Volume 4) First Printing. (no dust jacket) [shelfwear and light bumping/fraying to all corners, small light stain at right edge of front cover, internally clean and unmarked]. (B&W photographs) Provides cast/production credits for all films released in the U.S. during 1952. The "Promising Personalities" of the year contained quite a few actors who actually did fulfill their promise; those singled out (with full-page photos of each) included Richard Burton, Marilyn Monroe, Robert Wagner, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Tab Hunter, and Grace Kelly. (The lesser lights were Aldo Ray, Anne Francis, Dewey Martin, Jeffrey Hunter, Julia Adams, Keith Andes, and Allyn McLerie.) This year's "Portrait Dolls of Famous Film Folk" (thankfully confined to a single page) gives us a group shot of dreadful doll versions (created by Mary Green, "New York Artist") of John Barrymore, Marlene Dietrich, Ben Turpin, Clara Bow (particularly unlike the real thing) and Robert Stack. The volume is dedicated to Harriet Parsons, producer (and daughter of Louella).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor dj. (Volume 13). [light bumping to lower corners, otherwise just minor shelfwear; the jacket is heavily edgeworn, with numerous small tears and tiny chips, paper loss at both ends of spine, creasing, light soiling, etc. (serviceable in new mylar, but that's about the best I can say)]. (B&W photographs) Provides cast/production credits for all films released in the U.S. during 1961. Front jacket panel illustrations: Sophia Loren, Audrey Hepburn, Paul Newman, Natalie Wood, Maximilian Schell, Geraldine Page, Jeffrey Hunter. The "Promising Personalities" of the year included Connie Stevens, Warren Beatty, Susan Strasberg, George Chakiris, and Stella Stevens. This year's "Portrait Dolls of Famous Film Folk" (a feature that would, thankfully, soon be abandoned) is a group shot of doll renderings of Steve Reeves, Carole Lombard (looking exceptionally creepy), Bill Travers, and Ethel Barrymore; on the facing page is a full-length shot of Jayne Mansfield, and I had to look twice to make sure she wasn't also a doll version of herself. The volume is dedicated to Gilbert Roland. This year's obituaries are a pretty distinguished bunch, including Gary Cooper, Marion Davies, Barry Fitzgerald, Chico Marx, and Anna May Wong.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Ralph Affleck (illustrator). (Volume 14). [good sound copy, very light staining at bottom edge of front cover, mild shelfwear to lower extremities; jacket is modestly edgeworn, with a couple of short closed tears at the top of the front panel and and an inch of paper loss at the top of the spine]. (B&W photographs) Provides cast/production credits for all films released in the U.S. during 1962. Front jacket panel illustrations: Katharine Hepburn, Anthony Quinn, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford, Marlon Brando, Peter O'Toole, Shelley Winters. "Promising Personalities" of the year provide the usual mix of those who became major stars and those who, well, didn't: Peter O'Toole, Suzanne Pleshette, Ty Hardin, Janet Margolin, Trax Colton, Sue Lyon, Terence Stamp, Shirley Knight, Edson Stroll, Karl Schell, Christine Kaufmann, Marcello Mastroianni. (Sorry.Edson Stroll? Hard to imagine what the qualifications for "promising" were: he was a regular on 'McHale's Navy," and his feature film career seems to have consisted primarily of co-starring roles in not one but TWO of the gawdawful Three Stooges features of the early 1960s. Oh, well, it could have been worse: at least he wasn't Trax Colton.) This year's "Portrait Dolls of Famous Film Folk" (thankfully confined to a single page) gives us a group shot of doll versions of Mae West, Lillian and Dorothy Gish, Charles Laughton, and Wayne Morris. The volume is dedicated to actress Mary Boland.
