no binding. Condition: very good. This 1855 steel engraving features a distinguished portrait of Daniel O'Connell, Esq., an influential Irish political leader known for his role in advocating Catholic emancipation. The artwork is based on an original painting by J. Haverty, Esq., created expressly for the late Catholic Association of Ireland, and was meticulously engraved by J. T. W. The portrait captures O'Connell with a composed and confident demeanor, his right hand partially tucked into his coat, a classic pose symbolizing intellectual authority and leadership. He is dressed in formal attire typical of the early 19th century, including a high-collared shirt and a dark cloak with a richly textured scarf draped over his shoulders. Surrounding the portrait is an elaborate decorative border featuring intricate floral motifs and symbolic iconography. At the top of the frame, an allegorical vignette depicts an angel holding a trumpet, accompanied by a kneeling figure, possibly representing Ireland or the spirit of liberty. At the bottom, another vignette illustrates a solemn religious scene with figures gathered around an altar adorned with a cross and candles, signifying O'Connell's strong ties to the Catholic faith and his influence within the Church.
