Nell'effervescente contesto culturale del secondo XIX secolo, la coscienza nazionale dell'Italia unificata riscopriva la propria identità storica e le radici artistiche; si incrementavano i cantieri di scavo archeologico e di ripristino architettonico: fra i più emblematici quello di Sant'Ambrogio a Milano. In quest'orizzonte, l'ingegnere francese Fernand de Dartein (1838-1912) redigeva l'Étude sur l'architecture lombarde et sur les origines de l'architecture romano-byzantine, prima e colossale indagine sul romanico in Lombardia, e svolgeva i suoi sopralluoghi alla basilica, documentati da schizzi, disegni e planches acquerellate preparatorie alle incisioni. A cent'anni dalla morte dello studioso francese, questa ricerca ne ricostruisce l'indagine e riesamina alcune questioni problematiche, cronologiche e strutturali, riconsiderando come la basilica di Sant'Ambrogio nell'Ottocento abbia avuto nuova vita e sia diventata la basilica che oggi conosciamo. Ricorre quest'anno il centenario di Fernand de Dartein (1838-1912), appassionato studioso, ingegnere, docente a l'École Polytechnique e all'École de Ponts et Chaussées di Parigi, la cui opera epocale (L'etude sur l'architecture lombarde et les origines de Varchitetture romano-byzantine, pubblicato a Parigi tra il 1865 ed il 1882) ebbe, al suo apparire, una grande fortuna, continuando ancor oggi a rappresentare uno dei più autorevoli e consultati testi per gli studi sull'architettura dell'Italia settentrionale dei secoli X-XIII. Dartein ha dedicato più di venti anni (almeno dal 1860 al 1882) alla realizzazione del suo progetto, fecondo punto d'incontro (e di confronto) tra i maggiori protagonisti della cultura europea del suo tempo. La rivista 'Ananke presenta questo Quaderno, frutto della generosa collaborazione con l'archivio privato Demenge-Dartein, il CESCM dell'Università di Poitiers e con trenta studiosi di diverse discipline (la storia, la storia dell'arte, il rilievo, l'archeologia, il restauro) come prima occasione di riflessione ed approfondimento collegiale sulla prestigiosa figura, opera ed eredità dello studioso francese, in un'auspicata prospettiva di ulteriori nuove comuni iniziative a scala europea.
