First Edition
[Feminist Literature] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.491; [1]. Publisher's green cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper board. All edges untrimmed. Browning and very light spotting to edges and preliminaries. Neat later ownership to title page, blind bookseller's stamp to rear flyleaf. Light rubbing and a few marks to cloth. Very good. The best-known novel by the early Feminist author and essayist, who wrote extensively on marriage and the status of women in society during the 1880's and 1890's. Known and admired by Thomas Hardy, among others, her work tackled subjects which were deeply taboo in Victorian England, such as marital rape and a woman's right to defend herself against sexual violence. Throughout her career she supported women's suffrage movements, writing essays and attending demonstrations. All her novels are rare, there being no copies of this title recorded as sold at auction, no copies currently for sale (March 2019), and no UK first editions of any of her other novels for sale either. Taking its title from the Greek myth, in which the fifty daughters of Danaus are forced into marriage against their will, 'The Daughters of Danaus' tells the story of the thwarting of a woman's dreams to train as a composer in Paris, as she is consumed by domestic obligations.
