The description is still accurate. It was also then described as the longest suspension bridge in the world. This is still true despite the fact that the Golden Gate Bridge, the Verrazano~Narrows Bridge, and the soon~to~be completed Humber Bridge in England have longer center spans. The Mackinac Bridge, with its total suspension span length of 8,344 feet from anchor block to anchor block, remains unchallenged. This is the picture story of its building. From the beginning in May of 1954 every phase of construction was photographed. Under the auspices of the Mackinac Bridge Authority, its photographer, the late Herman Ellis, and his assistants, Harold Bell and Mickey Duggan, took some 3,000 black and white photographs and 1,000 color transparencies, covering in detail the building of the bridge. In addition, another 14,000 feet of 16 mm film was shot for motion picture documentary purposes. With few exceptions the pictures are from the official black and white photographs. Governing the selection of each picture was its visual descriptiveness, its human interest, and its contributions to the construction history of the bridge as a whole.
