Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. LARGE, Ernest Charles. Dawn in Andromeda. London: Jonathan Cape. 1956. 8vo. First edition. Signed by the author to half-title, "For M. E. Frances Bellerby, in sincerity" and dated June 1956. Bellerby was a respected poet. Publisher's mauve cloth lettered in white to spine panel and upper board, in the dust jacket. Also included is an abstract watercolour (A4) of a red smoke perforated by two chopsticks(?) with the pale sun behind - entitled to verso, 'Dawn in Andromeda' and signed Jessica Webster, November 1956. Large's final novel is a curious one, outrightly a science fiction fantasy, centred on five intelligent individuals who, chosen by God, are tasked with occupying an uninhabited planet quite like Earth. They are 'tasked with making a wireless set - a seveln-valve-all-wave-superhet - in one generation, starting naked from the sea'. The front flap dubiously evades the notion that the novel is satirical or allegorical. What can be said is that its focus lies not in the 'other' planet, but in the ingenuity of the human condition. A near fine copy, the cloth clean, bright, very mildly pushed at tips, the binding tight and mildly rolled. The textblock edges a trifle spotted, and at prelims, else clean. The dust jacket unclipped (15s net) and complete, with corners and tips a little bumped and rubbed. Scarce, especially so inscribed. Signed by Author(s).

C. Bawden who deserved it! with a fragment of the original rhubarb papyrus, from E. C. Large June 1956'. With an oblong fragment of 'rhubarb papyrus' still tipped in! Not price clipped (15s), no other inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 282pp. Botanist and author Ernest Charles Large (1902-1976). In the adventurous satire 'Dawn in Andromeda', God sends a representative sample of humanity to an uninhabited planet by way of experiment. Bawden (1908-72), was an expert on plants viruses. Extremely scarce signed. Signed by Author(s).
