Only a year out of office, the former president writes in support of the prominent Georgia attorney George T. Northen's effort to organize a Peace Society in… the early days of WWI, "I have your letter . and note that your are organizing the Atlanta Peace Society. I sincerely hope that you may make this an effective organization." Taft, who would go on to set up The League to Enforce Peace, expounds on his ideas "I believe that at the close of the present war a movement for the establishment of an arbitral court will have more support than ever before, and such Associations as yours can promote an organized movement for this purpose." Signed "Wm. H. Taft". Folded for mailing with minor creasing to the edges, else near fine. Secretary of War under Theodore Roosevelt and subsequently elected the 27th President of the United States William H. Taft (1857-1930) contemplated returning to practice law after leaving office. However, he foresaw a conflict of interest as he'd appointed so many federal judges, including many Supreme Court justices. He jumped at the offer from Yale Law School, which would appoint him as Kent Professor of Law and Legal History. While there, he prepared lectures on "Questions of Modern Government" and wrote several articles and treatises including "Our Chief Magistrate and His Powers". Following the outbreak of the First World War, Taft hoped to prevent war through an international association of nations, and assumed the presidency of The League to Enforce Peace in 1915, advocating for the creation of a League of Nations and world court. He would subsequently serve as the tenth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

Here the British King writes hastily to Lord Hawkesbury, his Secretary of State, outlining the lack of recent communications from his emissaries in Paris who were conducting peacetime negotiations with Napoleon after the fai…lure of the Treaty of Amiens the year before. King George III mentions receiving dispatches from Lord Whitworth, who was serving as the King's ambassador to France at the time; interestingly, it was Whitworth to whom Napoleon threatened war if Great Britain did not evacuate Malta just a few months earlier, in February 1803. Whitworth himself evacuated France the day after the present letter was written, in full knowledge that peace negotiations were over. The King also relates the failure of French General Jacques Lauriston to arrive in London, presumably for last-minute peace talks to prevent conflict. The King states that Lauriston's activities were likely intended to buy time for French negotiators. King George III then writes portentously, beginning the second and final paragraph: "War seems now so certain that Lord Hawkesbury cannot too soon form the negotiations between this country and France into a Manifesto and state the conduct of the latter fully since the conclusion of the Peace as the cause of the steps we have been obliged to take." In other words, the King is ordering his Secretary of State, Lord Hawkesbury, to state Great Britain's case for war with France. This is very likely the first admission by the King himself of the reality of impending war with France. Six days after the present letter was written, Great Britain declared war on France, sparking the long series of armed conflicts known as the Napoleonic Wars, which would culminate a dozen years later at the Battle of Waterloo. Important letters signed by King George III are rarely offered in the market. Rarer still are letters composed entirely in his hand and signed by him, as in the present example. Cheffin's Auctions in England sold a follow-up to the present letter (also to Lord Hawkesbury and dated two days later, on May 14) for £11,430 in January 2019. That letter was bought for £55 in 1966. By comparison, the present, earlier letter was bought by H. Richard Dietrich for $92 at Parke Bernet's Fitzgerald sale, on November 6, 1963. It has remained part of the Dietrich American Foundation collection since then. A momentous political and diplomatic communication from the King of England to his Secretary of State, resigned to the fact that war with Napoleon is at hand. [1]p., on an 8¾ x 6¾-inch sheet. Left margin reinforced with thicker paper, old folds. Mostly minor losses along left margin, just touching first letters of several words. Very good.

A trio of letters written and signed in English to an American named Mary Watson. They were written by at least two different people in China during the Chinese Communist Revolution. All three concern… the violence, suffering, and uncertainty that prevailed in China at the time. One letter states: Many times I decided to write to you, but I did not know to write a letter in such drastically changeable times. I wished to report some good news to you, but failed so many times. Peace movement is not likely to be successful. War is going on. Many people have been killed in battle-fields by war, even more people died because lack of food and cloth. Several days ago, it is said, more than 1,000 people have died in the streets in Shanghai due to the cold weather. Price index jumped three times in ten days. How the poor can stand? So the common people in every part of this country are praying for peace, despite what the terms between the fighting parties. They do not care this ism or that ism, want only a bare living. One of the writers was an economist, possibly working for the United Nations: Ill not give up my research program. The third letter, which was written by someone else, reports that the sender and his family planned on moving to Hong Kong in search of greater security and better healthcare: One conclusion may be drawn from my observation is that not at all bright (speaking moderately). My wife is expecting to give birth before end of January. Im not sure whether she can get adequate medical care by staying here. Furthermore the change is going to take place soon & when it comes certain unlucky people will be sacrificed during the interim period. I dont want to be one of them. For these two reasons we have decided to move on to Hong Kong. I hope & pray to get a job there. The letters are in very good condition with assorted toning, tears, and a seal that shows through from the other side of one letter. A fine collection of letters from an important time in world history.
