Only a year out of office, the former president writes in support of the prominent Georgia attorney George T. Northen's effort to organize a Peace Society in the early days of WWI, "I have your letter . and note that your are organizing the Atlanta Peace Society. I sincerely hope that you may make this an effective organization." Taft, who would go on to set up The League to Enforce Peace, expounds on his ideas "I believe that at the close of the present war a movement for the establishment of an arbitral court will have more support than ever before, and such Associations as yours can promote an organized movement for this purpose." Signed "Wm. H. Taft". Folded for mailing with minor creasing to the edges, else near fine.Secretary of War under Theodore Roosevelt and subsequently elected the 27th President of the United States William H. Taft (1857-1930) contemplated returning to practice law after leaving office. However, he foresaw a conflict of interest as he'd appointed so many federal judges, including many Supreme Court justices. He jumped at the offer from Yale Law School, which would appoint him as Kent Professor of Law and Legal History. While there, he prepared lectures on "Questions of Modern Government" and wrote several articles and treatises including "Our Chief Magistrate and His Powers". Following the outbreak of the First World War, Taft hoped to prevent war through an international association of nations, and assumed the presidency of The League to Enforce Peace in 1915, advocating for the creation of a League of Nations and world court. He would subsequently serve as the tenth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.…

A royal letter of profound import written entirely in the hand of King George III, and signed "George R." Here the British King writes hastily to Lord Hawkesbury, his Secretary of State, outlining the lack of recent communications from his emissaries in Paris who were conducting peacetime negotiations with Napoleon after the failure of the Treaty of Amiens the year before. King George III mentions receiving dispatches from Lord Whitworth, who was serving as the King's ambassador to France at the time; interestingly, it was Whitworth to whom Napoleon threatened war if Great Britain did not evacuate Malta just a few months earlier, in February 1803. Whitworth himself evacuated France the day after the present letter was written, in full knowledge that peace negotiations were over. The King also relates the failure of French General Jacques Lauriston to arrive in London, presumably for last-minute peace talks to prevent conflict. The King states that Lauriston's activities were likely intended to buy time for French negotiators. King George III then writes portentously, beginning the second and final paragraph: "War seems now so certain that Lord Hawkesbury cannot too soon form the negotiations between this country and France into a Manifesto and state the conduct of the latter fully since the conclusion of the Peace as the cause of the steps we have been obliged to take." In other words, the King is ordering his Secretary of State, Lord Hawkesbury, to state Great Britain's case for war with France. This is very likely the first admission by the King himself of the reality of impending war with France. Six days after the present letter was written, Great Britain declared war on France, sparking the long series of armed conflicts known as the Napoleonic Wars, which would culminate a dozen years later at the Battle of Waterloo. Important letters signed by King George III are rarely offered in the market. Rarer still are letters composed entirely in his hand and signed by him, as in the present example. Cheffin's Auctions in England sold a follow-up to the present letter (also to Lord Hawkesbury and dated two days later, on May 14) for £11,430 in January 2019. That letter was bought for £55 in 1966. By comparison, the present, earlier letter was bought by H. Richard Dietrich for $92 at Parke Bernet's Fitzgerald sale, on November 6, 1963. It has remained part of the Dietrich American Foundation collection since then. A trio of letters written and signed in English to an American named Mary Watson. They were written by at least two different people in China during the Chinese Communist Revolution. All three concern the violence, suffering, and uncertainty that prevailed in China at the time. One letter states: Many times I decided to write to you, but I did not know to write a letter in such drastically changeable times. I wished to report some good news to you, but failed so many times. Peace movement is not likely to be successful. War is going on. Many people have been killed in battle-fields by war, even more people died because lack of food and cloth. Several days ago, it is said, more than 1,000 people have died in the streets in Shanghai due to the cold weather. Price index jumped three times in ten days. How the poor can stand? So the common people in every part of this country are praying for peace, despite what the terms between the fighting parties. They do not care this ism or that ism, want only a bare living. One of the writers was an economist, possibly working for the United Nations: Ill not give up my research program. Franklin was, at that time, the most famous American in the world. His reputation was based on his scientific, literary and political accomplishments, and he was a natural choice for such a crucial mission. He quickly became a celebrated figure in Paris ? the toast of the city. Deane was the first American diplomat; in early 1776, he was sent to France by Congress in a semi-official capacity, as a secret agent to induce the French government to lend financial aid to the colonies. He was also to purchase munitions and supplies for Congress with money and credit from selling American commodities, and was to receive a 5% commission for this. Deane, often advancing his own funds, organized shipments of arms and munitions to America, thus helping finance the war, and enlisted the services of a number of Continental officers, among whom were Lafayette, DeKalb and Von Steuben. So he was already familiar with the French, and was well liked by them. Lee was the brother of Richard Henry Lee, who introduced the resolution in the Continental Congress declaring American independence.The three labored throughout 1777 to secure French recognition and assistance, but made little progress. Then in early December news reached Paris of the American victory at Saratoga, and it was celebrated in Paris as if the French themselves had gained the triumph. The French decided the time was right to enter into serious negotiations, and on February 6, 1778 treaties of alliance and commerce between the United States and France were signed by Alexander Gerard on behalf of the King of France and by all three American commissioners. The Treaty of Alliance required that neither France nor the United States would agree to a separate peace with Great Britain, and that American independence must be a condition of any future peace agreement. These provisions were extraordinary accomplishments for the American negotiators, as they guaranteed that France would be with the United States until the end. The Treaty of Amity and Commerce promoted trade and commercial ties between the two nations, which meant that the Americans would benefit from much-needed funds and munitions of war. French intervention proved to be critical to the success of the American Revolution.On March 4, Benjamin Franklin had written to Gerard requesting a meeting and through him a meeting with the King. The following day, Gerard wrote that the meeting would be granted. This was a huge step and Franklin intended on driving it home: the Treaty must be made public. G?rard met them on schedule. Franklin called them to the business of the evening by proposing that the treaty be announced immediately. Deane supported him. They argued that the announcement would preclude further British offers and bind France and America together, would promote the credit of the United States in Holland, and might even persuade London to agree to independence and end the war; peace, however, was perhaps not desirable until the British had been driven from America. The court was hesitating, G?rard answered, for fear that Congress would repudiate the alliance once France was committed to it.
