Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Inscribed by de Kooning on the front endpage, "love to Emilie, Bill". Very Good in a Good dust jacket. Some toning to endpapers as well as page margins. The price-clipped jacket has edge-wear including chipping and tears. Rear panel has a larger missing piece, measuring about three-quarters inch wide by one-quarter inch deep. Jacket spine rather heavily sunned, and with sunning to a lesser extent at all edges. Provenance: From the estate of Emilie "Mimi" Kilgore, who shared an important and well-documented relationship with de Kooning. The two met in 1970, and over the ensuing many years, Ms. Kilgore had a profound and vital impact on both the artist's life and his work. Sotheby's, in a nice write-up refers to her as "the woman who became his muse". In a letter to her, de Kooning states, ""I dedicate all of my paintings to you." He was entirely in love with Emilie -- invigorated by her sophistication, her relative youth, and her vibrant energy. In 1975, he asked Emilie to marry him -- an offer she declined, although they continued to remain close. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Willem de Kooning (illustrator). 1st Edition. 1st ed. Inscribed. de Kooning, title page. 1993 monograph from exhibit of work at the Hirschhorn Museum - has chapter on exchange of letters between de Kooning & his patrons, Joseph & Olga Hirschhorn. Willem de Kooning, a pioneer of Abstract Expressionism, was a super-star in 20th century art. This monograph explores the inter-relationship between de Kooning's paintings & drawings and ways to understand the artist's creative processes. De Kooning's art is traced from his native Rotterdam, his experiences in 1930s NY through to his development of intensely expressionist abstractions & figurative work in the 1940s & '50s -- digging in to the long, great run of art-making Willem de Kooning had over 5+decades. Full Description: O'HARA, Frank. DE KOONING, Willem, [artist]. LIMITED EDITIONS CLUB. Poems. With Lithographs by Willem De Kooning. New York: Limited Editions Club, 1988. Limited to 550 numbered copies with Willem de Kooning's facsimile, authorized signature taken from the hand-signed Bon a Tirer proof (as his health prohibited him from signing originals). This being number 35. Large folio (21 3/4 x 17 3/8 inches; 555 x 440 mm). With 17 original lithographs by Willem de Kooning. With publisher's prospectus. Publisher's original full black goatskin, Front board lettered in gilt. Spine lettered in black. In original black cloth, felt lined clamshell box. Box with a black leather spine label, lettered in gilt. A fine copy. "The Museum of Modern Art honored Frank O'Hara with a memorial edition of his poetry illustrated by artists who knew and loved himforemost among them, William de Kooning. De Kooning made his drawings on mylar which he then presented to the Museum. A quarter of a century later, the mylar drawings were transferred to lithographic plates and printed under the supervision of the artist and the Museum of Modern Art solely in order to illustrate the Club's edition of those O'Hara poems that had so moved de Kooning. Seventeen of de Kooning's eighteen charcoal drawings are reproduced here for the first time as originally intended-with their subtle strokes and wide tonal range. De Kooning's drawings were transferred from their original mylar sheets to lithographic plates and printed on hand--made ochre?tinted Kitakata paper. Each print was torn by hand and pressed into the book's pages by the intaglio method." (From the publisher). LEC Bibliography. HBS 69340. $2,750.

First edition. 8vo (23.3cm). Unpaginated, [16] pages, black and white illustrations. Photo-illustrated wrappers. Bilingual text in English and Italian. Signed by de Kooning on the half-title and inscribed:" "To dear Fritz with love / de Kooning." Catalogue for de Kooning's exhibit of thirty-seven drawings (16 reproduced here) shown for the first time in Europe at the 12th Festival dei Due Mondi, with a bilingual introduction as well as de Kooning's essay "What Abstract Art Means to Me," reprinted from the Museum of Modern Art Bulletin (195, talk delivered at the "What is Abstract Art?" symposium, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, February 5, 1951). This Spoleto exhibition was organized in collaboration with the Knoedler Gallery, New York. All of the drawings were executed in 1968-69. Similar inscriptions "to Fritz" found in auction records and the trade suggest these were all to Fritz Bultman, though an unpublished de Kooning proof [Untitled (Bather 2)] catalogued at Bonham's in May 2019 inscribed "to Fritz and Matilda." may suggest otherwise (Bultman's wife was the stained-glass artist, model, and dancer Jeanne Lawson Bultman). An affectionate inscription nonetheless on a somewhat uncommon exhibition catalogue. Covers edgeworn; sparse foxing to front panel with heavier to rear panel and top page edges. Binding is sound and pages unmarked.

Full Leather. Condition: Fine - As New. Limited Numbered First Deluxe Edition. A very scarce magnificent book in fine, like new condition in a fine custom clamshell case with the scarce shipping carton, SIGNED by five of the world's greatest artists: Marc Chagall (1887-1985), Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986), Joan Miro (1893-1983), Ivan Albright (1897-1983) and W. de Kooning (1904-1997) on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1979. The signatures are original and are each on a separate page. In addition, the great Marc Chagall signed and dated his signature, "Pour Art Inst. Chicago, Marc Chagall, 1979." First printing deluxe edition (so stated), copy # 60 of 100 total copies issued as one of four major events celebrating the Art Institute's 100th birthday, according to David C. Hilliard, Life Trustee of the Art Institute of Chicago who headed the project. According to Mr. Hilliard, the deluxe books were sold, in good part, to buy an Indian sculpture in honor of Board Chairman James Alsdorf and his wife Marilyn. Per Hilliard: "There is a good story connected with the book. We sent a young man down to visit Georgia O'Keefe and ask for her agreement to participate. Georgia could be prickly, so we chose as our envoy a young man whose father had given her the land on which she had her house and studio. And indeed he was given a warm reception and tour. When they parted, Georgia said she would sign. but then added "If you will tell me the location of my painting that I gave to the Art Institute, 'East River from the Shelton.'" We were overjoyed and asked the American Arts Department to let us see it. As Georgia knew, it had presumably been stolen years before, and a full search could not locate it. But she relented (I think she enjoyed her joke) and signed the books anyway!" Printed and bound by RR Donnelley & Sons' Lakeside Press. Bound in very fine dark red Morocco leather with beautiful gold gilt on the page edges. In beautiful very fine condition. THE BOOK: The book measures 10.5" x 14." In addition to the valuable signature pages, this large book contains beautiful color reproductions of 100 of the most magnificent art treasures that the Art Institute of Chicago holds in trust, including paintings by the artists who signed the book. Enclosed in a heavy wood clamshell box covered by matching red leather with a large gold gilt lion on the front lid. The art world has now lost all of these great artists but in this book their signatures and their paintings live on. A very special and collectable book. Weighs over 10 lb.
