Full dark green calf, spine & upper board titled & elaborately decorated in gilt, all edges gilt, gilt dentelles, marbled end-papers. This copy was a presentation copy from the author to Dora W. Rooper, Christmas 1867. It carries George Rooper's bookplate and has the initials G.R. in gilt at the foot of the spine. Spine & corners rubbed but a good association copy of a scarce book. I think it is unlikely that this would have been the only copy bound thus. It was two years later that the two stories were combined with others in Flood, Field And Forest. .

Garrett writes to thank Vanderbilt University English professor James Filroy for a positive review of his historical novel *Death of the Fox* (Doubleday, 1971) published in *The Nashville Banner*. Garrett writes: "Over the years I have seldom chosen the possibly arbitrary, self-imposed rule of not writing in response to reviews, favorable or unfavorable. But it seems to me that good manners and a sense of real gratitude combine to make it almost imperative that I dispense with all the rules. (.) You are too generous in your notice, and I am certainly cognizant of a good number of flaws and faults in the book. But I am grateful to you for your intelligent and most perceptive accounting of the positive." Garrett closes by hoping that "when and if" he visits Nashville, they will have a chance to meet. A cordial and seemingly genuine letter of appreciation for a positive literary review.

Among the most widely adapted of the beast fables, the tales of Reynard the Fox originated in the 12th and 13th centuries, with early versions in French, Dutch, Latin, and German being notable. Caxton printed the first English translation based on a Flemish text in 1481. The character of Reynard, an anthropomorphic fox and trickster, has since become almost an archetype in the literatures of many languages."The supreme 'anti-hero' of medieval fiction" (Cambridge Guide to Children's Books in English).
