Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Agatha Christie (1937) 'Death on the Nile', UK first edition, first printing, published by Collins, The Crime Club. Together with a handwritten and signed letter by Christie addressed to legendary actor and director Richard Attenborough. The book: in excellent, near fine condition. No previous owner's scribbles, no bookplates, no stamps. One pencil number 90 written to top front free endpaper. Internally very clean without the usual foxing often found in other copies. Page block edges clean. The boards are well preserved and retain their original deep orange colour. The spine is not faded as mostly seen. The original dust jacket is missing. A facsimile example has done a good job in shielding the boards from any UV damage. Scrace in such nice condition. The letter: two pages on one sheet, 8vo, handwritten on Christie's personal Winterbrook House, Wallingford, Berkshire stationary, dated 12th December [most likely 1964], addressed to Richard Attenborough: "'Dear Dickie, I've just got to write to say that I am bursting with admiration! You really are the TOPS as an actor. Batasi was a wonderful film - the best I've seen for ages and you were superb in it. Both Marc & I thought so. And now I've just seen the Third Secret & that wonderful character study of the little art dealer - half frightening, half pathetic - And before that you did a superb portrayal of a [illegible] husband of a mental medium - can't remember the name of the film now - but it will be a long time before I forget you in it. Well - after that a happy Xmas to you when you see - O to Sheila [illegible closing remark] Agatha Christie Mallowan". In the latter Christie praises Richard for his three roles in the 1964 films: Guns at Batasi [Regimental Sgt. Major Lauderdale]; The Third Secret [Alfred Price-Gorham]; and Séance on a Wet Afternoon [Billy Savage]. For Batasi and Séance Atenborough would win the BAFTA Award for best actor. Richard Attenborough (1923-2014) English Actor & Film Director, double Academy Award winner [Gandhi, 1982]. Attenborough had been the original cast member of Detective Sergeant Trotter in the West End stage production of Agatha Christie's The Mousetrap which opened at the Ambassadors Theatre in 1952 and became the world's longest running stage production. A wonderful association between the legendary crime writer and legendary actor and director who in would also play Judge Arthur Cannon in the 1974 film adaptation of Agatha Christie's famous whodunnit And Then There Were None. 8vo. 16 volumes. The first sixteen Mamur Zapt novels. Volumes 1, 10, 11, 12 & 14 are signed. Original hardcovers. Dust-wrappers: Volume 1 is slightly faded on the spine and has a very short closed tear to the bottom edge of the back panel. Volumes 2, 3, 6 & 7 are a little rumpled and rubbed at the spine ends. Volume 7 is price-clipped. Near fine in near fine d/ws. This collection represents an excellent opportunity to catch up on the career of the Mamur Zapt, the British head of Cairo's political CID. The former owner must have stopped collecting in 2008, since there were three more Mamur Zapt novels before Michael Pearce died on 20th July 2022 which are not included here. The Mark of the Pasha is the 'final' book in historical terms, set in 1919, and the last three published titles deal with events in earlier years. The first fourteen novels were published by Collins Crime Club or, from 1994, Collins Crime. Poisoned Pen Press published the next two and Severn House the last three books.
