Add to basketBarnett Freedman (illustrator). 400x198mm. Single sheet of cartridge paper. Two sided. Pink marks to the corners, and margins. Evidently from a larger sheet of similar drawings as the pencil marks which frame this continue to where it has been trimmed. Unsigned, but with a very faint pencil mark to the bottom left-hand margin: 'Jerry Ososki'. It depicts a gentleman in full frame, smoking a pipe and with the vague outline of a walking stick. He is in a three-piece suit. There are some stylistic suggestions to other work of his - both in subject and form. The 'heavy' line is characteristic of Freedman's portraiture - the undereye and the blunt chin. It is indelicate - they are clunky and sculptural. While the form bears some resemblance to Ososki, the inscription is too faint to confirm this. To the verso, there is a decorative interior piece. The orientation of this is difficult. It depicts an ornate design, possibly a fireplace, emboldened by charcoal, and other additional sketches. There are two annotations in pencil, possibly in Freedman's hand, which read '63 FM Catalogue' and 'No. 37'. Provenance on request. This double-sided working sheet offers a raw glimpse into the mid-century studio environment, likely originating from the circle of the Royal College of Art's 'Golden Generation'. The recto features a character study in graphite, whose sculptural line-work and 'muscular' drafting style strongly align with Barnett Freedman's observational technique of the 1920s and 30s. The identification of 'Jerry' in the lower margin suggests the sitter is Freedman's close contemporary, Gerald Ososki, a frequent model within their tight-knit Stanhope Street social group. The verso, bearing the notation '63 FM Catalogue' alongside classical, architectural layouts, might have been a study for some of Freedman's architectural or interior work. While unsigned, the combination of intimate portraiture and technical production marks provides a significant stylistic link to Freedman's documented dual career as a fine artist and master lithographer. Barnett Freedman CBE, RDI (1901-1958) was a titan of mid-century British realism and a master of auto-lithography who rose from a working-class East End background to become a central figure in the RCA's "Golden Generation" alongside Henry Moore and Eric Ravilious. Renowned for his "muscular" draftsmanship and sculptural treatment of form, he served as a prolific Official War Artist during WWII, famously capturing the technical grit of submarine interiors and the Normandy landings. A champion of "Art for All," Freedman bridged the gap between fine art and commercial design, producing iconic work for London Transport and the BBC while maintaining a rigorous private practice that is now represented in the Tate, V&A, and the British Museum.
