Es gilt als ein frühes Referenzwerk zur Untersuchung der Beständigkeit von Polymermaterialien gegenüber Umwelteinflüssen. Die praktische Bedeutung des Buches liegt vor allem in seiner Pionierrolle für die industrielle Qualitätssicherung und Materialprüfung von Kunststoffen in den 1960er Jahren. In einer Zeit, in der Kunststoffe massenhaft Einzug in die Industrieproduktion und in den Konsum der Verbraucher hielten, bot das Werk erstmals eine systematische Zusammenfassung für die Fachwelt. Mit entscheidenden Hinweisen: (1) Vorhersage der Lebensdauer. Das Buch lieferte Ingenieuren und Chemikern wissenschaftliche Grundlagen, um die Haltbarkeit von Kunststoffprodukten (z. B. im Außenbereich oder Bauwesen) unter realen Umweltbedingungen wie UV-Strahlung und Hitze besser einschätzen zu können. (2) Entwicklung von Stabilisatoren: die Publikation dokumentierte Methoden zur chemischen Modifikation von Polymeren, um deren Abbau zu verzögern. Dies war entscheidend für die Entwicklung von Lichtschutzmitteln und Antioxidantien, die heute standardmäßig in fast jedem Kunststoffprodukt enthalten sind. (3) Prüfstandards. Die Beiträge des Symposiums am halfen dabei, standardisierte Testverfahren (wie die beschleunigte Bewitterung) zu etablieren, mit denen Hersteller die Wetterbeständigkeit ihrer Produkte bereits im Labor prüfen konnten. Für die Industrie bot das Werk eine Referenz, um Verfärbungen, Versprödung oder Rissbildung an Kunststoffen physikalisch-chemisch zu verstehen und bei Fehlproduktionen die Ursache (z. B. Photooxidation) zu identifizieren. Industriegeschichtlich: heutzutage dient das Werk oft als historischer Referenzpunkt in der Forschung zu Mikroplastik, da es die grundlegenden Mechanismen beschreibt, die dazu führen, dass Makroplastik in der Umwelt zerfällt.
