Add to basketPaperback. Condition: New. "I read somewhere that everybody on this planet is separated by only six other people. Six degrees of separation. It's a profound thought. How every person is a new door, opening up into other worlds." Six Degrees of Separation is a modern American classic play: an explosive comedy that exposes white middle-class hypocrisy and prejudice. The play is a sharp, witty but serious exploration of the individual in society and the values or beliefs which motivate them. A young African-American man gains access to the homes of upper-class New Yorkers by pretending to be the son of actor Sidney Poitier. Treated with suspicion and then affection, he soon wreaks havoc in their comfortable lives. The play first opened off-Broadway in 1990 and, after playing to sold-out houses and ovating audiences, it was produced internationally and made into a blockbuster film starring Donald Sutherland, Stockard Channing and Will Smith in 1994. It won numerous awards, including an Olivier and New York Drama Critics' Circle Award.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Chocolate brown cloth quarter-bound over same colored brown paper on boards with bright, as new gilt lettering to spine. Book is tight, square, sharp-cornered and overall Fine. Unclipped Dust Jacket shows only very minor shelfwear and Near Fine. Front has drawing of James McDaniel on front, and a b/w photo of Stockard Channing, McDaniel and John Cunningham on the back. Those three along with others starred in the initial run of the play at Lincoln Center Theater. Guare, inspired by a con artist who ingratiated himself with New York's elites, wrote the play and followed with a screenplay for the 1993 film directed by Fred Schipisi, featuring a cast that included, among others, Stockard Channing (reprising her role from the play), Will Smith (in an early, dramatic role), Donald Sutherland, and Ian McKellen. Ironically, actor Kevin Bacon was not associated with either the play or film, though with it he inspired the game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. Guare apparently coined the title phrase to describe the social and statistical phenomena researched by Stanley Milgram in the 1960s.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First edition, hardcover issue. Small remainder stripe bottom edge, modest foxing on the page edges, else near fine in near fine dustwrapper with some barely noticeable foxing on the front panel. A nice of this play, inspired by a true story, that was the basis for the 1993 film directed by Fred Schipisi, with a screenplay by Guare, and featuring a splendid cast that included, among others, Stockard Channing (reprising her role from the play), Will Smith (in an early, dramatic role), Donald Sutherland, and Ian McKellen. Unfortunately actor Kevin Bacon was not directly associated with either the play or film, though with it he inspired the game Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. Guare apparently coined the title phrase to describe the social and statistical phenomena researched by Stanley Milgram in the 1960s (that any individual can be linked personally to any other random individual through only a few intermediaries), and it is now a stock part of the English language. The hardcover issue of the first edition is uncommon.
