Denmark ? Large Format Antique Map by Pinkerton, Fine English Engraving c.1814 This impressive antique map of Denmark originates from John Pinkerton's celebrated Modern Atlas, published in London circa 1814. Known for its clarity and precision, the map exemplifies early 19th-century British cartography at its finest. It includes detailed topographical and political information on Jutland, Funen, Zealand, and the surrounding islands, extending to parts of Schleswig-Holstein and southern Sweden. The engraving is remarkably detailed, with fine copperplate lines that create a subtly three-dimensional appearance?typical of Pinkerton's style. Mountain ranges, coastlines, rivers, and towns are clearly marked, and boundaries are delicately hand-colored in shades of yellow, green, red, and rose. In the upper left corner is an inset of the Faroe Islands (Feroe Isles), further emphasizing the map's comprehensive scope of the Danish territories. John Pinkerton (1758?1826) was one of the most respected mapmakers of his time. His atlas was praised for its large format, clarity, and scientific accuracy, and it represented a shift in English mapmaking from decorative to more functional and precise cartography. This map is an excellent example of the transitional period between the highly ornate maps of the 17th?18th centuries and the more technical, modern geographic approach that became dominant in the 19th century. It remains not only a beautiful decorative object but also a valuable historical reference. Condition report: Very good condition. Original hand color with light toning to the paper and some faint offsetting, primarily in blank areas. A minor central fold, as issued. Framing tips: A neutral-toned mat (ivory or cream) with a black, dark brown, or weathered wood frame will highlight the map's classic elegance. Consider UV-filtering glass for protection.
