Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition (Stated). INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY AUTHOR. As new hardcover in dust jacket. Born in a poor fishing village under difficult circumstances, Masako, a descendant of the Satsuma Samurai Clan, grew up burdened with many, filial responsibilities, in a rigorously class-conscious and patriarchal society-one headed for massive and profound change. Unable to reconcile herself to the many roles within roles imposed upon her, and feeling in her heart that she was destined to make a difference, Masako embarked on a lifelong journey of growth and self-discovery that took her across the Pacific Ocean and eventually led her to God. In their sixties-when most Americans are hoping to retire and enjoy the fruits of their labors-Masako and her husband Carl spent three years as the first Lay Missionaries for the Society of St. Columban in Japan. Those years, while life changing, were also painful and left Masako scarred and in a state of spiritual and emotional crisis. Questioning her role, her identity, and her very worth, Masako returned to the United States to rebuild a life, and reconnect with the Church community. I Thought The Sun Was God is a powerful story of faith's eventual triumph over deprivation, denial, and rejection. It relates the author's struggle with adversity and injustice, culminating with her eventual surrender to the true higher power. It is about the struggle versus adversity and injustice, but it is also about surrender to one true higher power and finding one's voice while listening for the small, still voice of God. Signed.

Softcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. On offer is an exceptional and complete composition book written by Ms. Bertha Anna King. Ms. King's family were among the early settlers of the state of Oregon, and she is descended from Nahum Amos King. Nahum A. King was a War of 1812 veteran, who was a survivor of the "Lost Wagon Train" on the Oregon Trail. Kings Valley, Oregon is named for him as he is known to be the first white settler in the region. Our author, Bertha Anna King, was born in Oregon in February of 1889. She passed away in January, 1987, weeks shy of her 99th birthday. She never married. During her life, she graduated from Oregon Agricultural College and worked as a schoolteacher while helping her parents with her many brothers and sisters in Oregon. This composition book was kept when King was 16 years of age, apparently as part of her high school education studies. It was written in 1905-1906. It contains a number of essays on a variety of topics including: Some Thoughts about the Lewis and Clark Fair, Resume: Pilgrims Progress by John Bunyan, The Origin and History of Halloween, The Panama Canal, What has so far been accomplished, Resume: The Man Without a Country by Edward Everett Hale, Observations Made and Lessons Drawn from the Recent Cataclysm in California, The Future of Alaska and Debate: Girls Tryout O. A. C. Feb. 17, 1905, among many others Two prominent articles are the descriptions of the Lewis and Clark Fair and the great earthquake in California. An excerpt of King's description of the Lewis and Clark fair follows: "I visited the fair in August, a poor time to see the surroundings which have been called the chief beauty of the Exposition, for the hills were then obscured with smoke, but this did not diminish the brilliancy of the lights. Never had I imagined anything so splendid as those dazzling lights. They were to be seen everywhere, out lining the buildings, among the trees, in tree shaped groups on the bridges and across the river, making the stars look dim. The fair grounds have a different aspect by day, the buildings still dazzle the eyes but it is only by their whiteness and the sun. Most of the buildings overlooked Guild's Lake, but the Government exhibit was on an inland reached by the Bridge of Nations. This was a very interesting exhibit. There were a large number of life like wax figures. I came to look at almost every person I saw to make sure if he were real or not. I remember admiring one wax figure which surprised me presently by walking away. We saw many modes of camps and one of the Annapolis Naval Academy". An excerpt of her description of the California earthquake follows: "Soon after five o'clock on the morning of April eighteenth, San Francisco, the Queen City of the Pacific Coast, was visited by the greatest earthquake known in the history of California. Within a short time, the world knew of the trouble and was sending money, provisions and advice to the stricken people. The earthquake shocks lasted about three minutes and increased in violence. People rushed from their rocking dwellings clad only in their night garments, only to be endangered by the falling buildings. Three hundred thousand were soon homeless. To add to the terror and confusion, fire broke out and as the water mains were broken by the shocks, dynamite was the only means by which the fire could be checked but it proved almost useless and two days passed before the flames were brought under control. Ten square miles had been burned over. Meanwhile the city was put under martial law"The composition book also includes nine individual pages, written in a very obviously different hand. The larger of the two consists of six double-sided pages and is a reflection on the economic troubles of the time in which it was written. It is unsigned and undated but appears to have been written by a younger man, likely during the Great Depression. His thoughts on self-sufficiency and 'socialism' echo down to the debates in the United States today. For a historian, this composition book and the included ephemera offer an excellent look into the world at the beginning of the 20th century as seen through the eyes of a young woman in western United States. For a genealogist, this is a direct connection to one of the original settlers in Oregon and a family that played an important role in opening up the state to settlement. Measuring 9.5 inches by 7.5 inches, it contains 200 numbered pages and is 100% complete. The hard cover is intact but bears a great deal of staining from age. The binding is in good condition as are the pages. The handwriting is quite legible. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 200 pages; Signed by Author.

The author was the geographer of this great scientific expedition to South America sent by the government to measure the degree of longitude at the Equator, to determine the exact dimensions of the planet. Once the measurements were completed, each of the members returned to France by different routes from Peru, with the object of maximizing the opportunities to make scientific observations. La Condamine elected to return via the Amazon and this volume informs us of the first scientific exploration of the great river; his descriptions are enhanced by interesting and curious observations. Add to basketA major historical work written by Admiral Sir H W Richmond with the signature of a twentieth century member of the SuffRen family and lovingly annotated by the same in reference to the French Admiral's exploits. The book provides a study of the policy governing the naval forces in India and the operations conducted in the wars between 1763 and 1783. Interestingly, many of the facts within this volume have been very heavily annotated with 100s of handwritten detailed corrections and errata to the text. Multiple facts, dates, spellings and figures have been amended both within the text and the footnotes. Particular attention has been paid to any reference to Vice Admiral Pierre André de Suffren who fought against British Vice-AdmiralSir Edward Hughes in numerous battles to command the Indian Ocean. Passages including de Suffren's name are underlined and edited throughout and a note of page numbers which include mention of him but have not been included in the index are handwritten to the front free endpaper. Additionally, handwritten to the free endpaper is the previous ownership signature and a date, 'C. Suffren 18. Iii. 31'. Presumably in the hand of a descendent of Pierre Andre de Suffren? PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION First Edition in good condition. Green cloth covered boards sunned to spine and top edges. Titled in gilt to spine and decoratively to front board. Front endpapers contain numerous handwritten notes presumably made by C Suffren detailing errata and corrections to specific page numbers made within the leaves of the volume. To the top front free endpaper the name and date 'C. Suffren 18.iii.31' is written in black ink. Bookseller's label attached to front pastedown reads 'Marine Books. Hoylake.' Rear endpapers clean. Soft cover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. On offer is a pair of diaries kept by the granddaughter of two Knox County, Ohio pioneers who lived her entire life in Jackson Township. The author is Margaret (Melick) Hall (1839-1911). She was born to parents William Melick (1806-1878) and Sarah Beatty (1808-1888). Margaret s grandparents were David Melick (1784-1867) and Hannah Hankins (1789-1853) , who were the "second settlers" in Jackson Township, Knox County, Ohio, arriving there in 1810. Margaret married Allison G. Hall (1835-1912) , a farmer, on March 9, 1865. Margaret married Allison after the death of his first wife, Harriet (1842-1861) , who was Margaret s younger sister. Together, Margaret and Allison had five children: Eldora Ella (1868 1956) , Major Grant (1873 1943) , Addie (1878 1963) , Eliza (1880 1966) and Earl (1884 1887). Margaret keeps her first diary at age 58, writing daily and filling the book from cover to cover, from Jan 1-Sept 15, 1897. She begins her second diary at age 71. It covers May 21, 1910-April 14, 1911. Margaret keeps the diary herself until March 24, 1911. She died on March 25 at 4: 00 am, and her diary was immediately continued by one of her daughters, with the first entry by her daughter written the very night of her death. Margaret's writing focuses on the daily happenings in Jackson, mostly as they relate to her husband and children. She touches on her own work as a farm wife, her church and social commitments, local gossip and news (she seems to record the deaths of everyone in town! ) , and her husband s farming. As a member of the Melick family, Margaret has close ties to Jackson s early history, and she frequently discusses her interactions with other Melicks. Some excerpts give a sense of her writing: "This is another cold daywe washed. Ally and Bill husk corn in the barn. Bill went to town and got coal oil. Charley Darings had a baby berried [sic]" [Jan 27, 1897]. ".Mages was here Eva was making her black dress. Warden come over him and Mage put a new floor over the well and fixed the pump. Elle and I went out to Rob Melick s to see their boy Frank he is bad sick" [Feb 13, 1897]. "This was a warm day. Ally went to mill. I went down as far as Add s we was there for dinner we got word that our carpet was done. Ally went back to town this evening to send the money to the man for weaving of it he lives at Vernon. Silva Wolf had a new girl baby" [April 24, 1897]. ".I sowed some turnip seed we killed a chicken for Lide to take to the Rainrock picnic" [Sept 2, 1910]. ".Mrs. Bender got Lides dress done before. 30 C. Ell and Lide took Mrs. Bender to town. I went to meeting . Blanch Mavis died" [Nov 15, 1910]. ".We butchered. Tom Warda Ret and Andy Mavis helped we killed three hogs" [Nov 28, 1910]. ".Lide is gone to town she took Ell down to go to Utica on the hack. Tomorrow she is going to John Howel s to work. Lide got home before dark. Down to zero this morning" [Dec 10, 1910]. ".We baked bread and pies and got dinner and supper. Lids made popcorn balls. We got 8 postcards for Christmas 4 from Major and 3 from Ell" [Dec 24, 1910]. ".Sarah Hall and Will Melick was here this afternoon a while. Rol Hall was here to get [money] to hire Sims to preach next year. Mavis was here to rent corn ground. I churned. Lide got dinner" [Jan 9, 1911]. "This was a nice day it was cold 8 above zero. The remainder of the pages are filled by Margaret s daughter.
