Probably the first paper on the principles of electronic digital computers published in Austriaan outline of the basic principles of electronic digital computer design. This paper was submitted to the Acta physica austriaca in December 1948 though it did not appear in print until 1950. When the paper was submitted, only the Manchester "Baby" prototype stored-program computer was in limited operation. There was no functioning electronic computer in continental Europe until 1950, when Konrad Zuse's electromechanical Z4, in storage since 1945, was refurbished and installed at ETH in Zurich.
