Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Desk is, with admirable directness, a book about desks: those flat-topped theatres of ambition where civilisation has chosen to pile bills, manuscripts, coffee rings, tax dread, paperclips, unread letters, and the small accusing objects that make up a working life. Todd Lyon takes the desk seriously, which is only fair, since the desk has been quietly taking us seriously for centuries, sitting there while we pretend the problem is the room, the lighting, the chair, the economy, or ?just needing a better system.? This is a design book, a furniture book, and a small cultural confession. The desk is never just a desk. It is a workplace, altar, battlefield, command centre, status object, dumping ground, creative nest, administrative trap and occasional dining surface for people who have surrendered to deadlines. Presidents have desks. Writers have desks. Architects have desks. Schoolchildren have desks. Receptionists have desks. People who claim to work ?paperlessly? have desks, usually covered in chargers and moral failure. Lyon?s book looks at the desk as object and idea: its forms, functions, history, style, ingenuity and stubborn psychological weight. Roll-top desks, writing desks, office desks, modernist desks, grand desks, practical desks, beautiful desks, desks that suggest genius, desks that suggest invoices, desks that suggest someone once had a fountain pen and a very firm handshake. Here is furniture as biography, because few things reveal a person faster than the horizontal surface they believe they are ?keeping on top of.? There is a lovely irony in making a handsome book about the very object on which handsome books are buried under stationery. Desks promise order, productivity and intellectual command, then immediately become landscapes of postponement. They are sold as tools of efficiency and become museums of unfinished intention. A clean desk says one thing, a chaotic desk another, and a desk with one mysterious old key, three receipts and a dried-up highlighter says perhaps the truest thing of all. For lovers of design, interiors, furniture history, office culture, writing rooms, studios, workspaces, or simply the strange domestic theatre of where humans place their elbows while trying to matter, this is a pleasingly particular volume. It is the kind of book that may cause you to look at your own desk with renewed suspicion, which is probably healthy, provided you do not look too long or the paperwork will make eye contact. Good copy, as sold by Crappy Old Books. A book about desks, now itself ready to be placed on one, lost under another book, moved to a chair, rescued during a tidy-up, and finally appreciated in the brief golden interval before someone puts a mug on it. …
