Il recourt à une riche documentation ? y compris 98 phototypies ? pour décrire les destructions touchant des lieux en France, Belgique et ailleurs (notamment Reims, Arras, Soissons, Louvain, Namur) et pour discuter les questions de responsabilité, de réparations, de propagande et de justification des actes par les belligérants. Il cherche à nuancer les accusations mutuelles en matière de vandalisme de guerre, en montrant que l?évaluation des destructions est souvent complexe et sujette à interprétation.

Freiburg in Breisgau, B. Herder, 1917, in-8°, 133 pp, index, 98 black/white illustrations, bound in modern red half cloth, gilt title on smooth spine. Ex-library with printed ex-libris and cancellation stamp on the first paste down. Nice copy. Ignominious German publication by a leading theologian and art-historian to diminish or outright deny the German responsability for the destruction of e.g. the Reims Cathedral, the Louvain University Library ( together with many houses) etc. . In 1933 (!) he was awarded a honorary function in the Vatican by the Pope . From 1925 till 1933 he was chancellor of the Freiburg University.
