Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Ex-library with the usual library markings (if not for the library markings this copy would be graded in fine condition); overall a nice used copy! Black boards with silver lettering on the spine. 164 historical and informative pages! "The threat of nuclear weapons did not fade away with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Rather, the geopolitical disorders of the post-Cold War era and the rise of global terrorism have ensured that they remain conspicuously present on the world stage as a serious international concern. With the eight or nine nuclear powers maintaining about 27,000 nuclear weapons in their arsenals to this day, it is clear that they are here to stay for the foreseeable future. The primary mission of these nuclear forces has been and remains deterrence. Using plain language rather than policy jargon, this historically focused book shows how nuclear deterrence has worked rather than how it should. It then shows how the growing threat of nuclear proliferation threatens to create a far more complicated international situation largely because of the attendant proliferation of state nuclear deterrents. By drawing on a wide array of new sources from international archives and the latest in international scholarship, Coleman and Siracusa put some of the most important and enduring problems of nuclear deterrence over the past sixty years into global context. Nuclear deterrence in the real world often operates very differently from how it should according to the prevailing theories, and Coleman and Siracusa take a fresh look at how nuclear weapons policy has been made, finding that it often has had surprisingly little to do with what works and what does not. By studying in depth how governments here and abroad have confronted and dealt with some of the most important issues in nuclear weapons policy, for example, How many nuclear weapons are enough? and What is it that will deter? they find that the making of nuclear weapons policy is a complex, fluid bargaining process subject to the tides of politics, budgets, threat perception, ideology, technology, parochial service rivalries, flawed information, and sometimes just plain wishful thinking.".

Trade paperback. Condition: Very good. First Paperback Printing [Stated]. x, [2], 345, [3] pages. Figure. Table. List of Contributors. Notes. Index. Thazha Varkey Paul (born in 1956) is an Indo-Canadian political scientist. He is a Distinguished James McGill professor of International Relations in the department of Political Science at McGill University. Paul specializes in International Relations, especially international security, regional security and South Asia. He is most notable for his work on asymmetric warfare, soft balancing, and deterrence theory. He has also contributed to the literatures on nuclear non-proliferation, and South Asian security. Patrick M. Morgan was a respected international security scholar who specialized in international conflict, deterrence, regional security, US-European relations, alliances and multilateralism, and East Asian security affairs. James J. Wirtz was chairman and associate professor, Department of National Security Affairs, Naval Postgraduate School, California. As the costs of a preemptive foreign policy in Iraq have become clear, strategies such as containment and deterrence have been gaining currency among policy makers. This comprehensive book offers an agenda for the contemporary practice of deterrenceespecially as it applies to nuclear weaponsin an increasingly heterogeneous global and political setting. Moving beyond the precepts of traditional deterrence theory, this groundbreaking volume offers insights for the use of deterrence in the modern world, where policy makers may encounter irrational actors, failed states, religious zeal, ambiguous power relationships, and other situations where the traditional rules of statecraft do not apply. A distinguished group of contributors here examines issues such as deterrence among the Great Powers; the problems of regional and nonstate actors; and actors armed with chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons. Complex Deterrence will be a valuable resource for anyone facing the considerable challenge of fostering security and peace in the twenty-first century.

India is still a young nation state with an amazing legacy of civilisational and cultural consciousness. The long history of the freedom movement produced enviable political leaders and activists, with profound ethical and moral norms. The venerable Mahatma Gandhi epitomised the moral values and instilled the same amongst his followers - from Sardar Patel to Nehru. Nehru had an abhorrence for maintaining or modernising a military force, was suspicious about any form of military leadership and despite his experience of the role of the military in safeguarding Kashmir, he considered national security to be solvable by the application of diplomacy. Having faced innumerable military defeats during the last millennia, the Indian leadership was predisposed to believe that non-violent struggle against the British had achieved independence for India. This relegation of the strategic dimensions of security cost India dear when confronted by the Chinese. The 1962 War shattered Nehru, his idealism, world views and cultural moorings. It also exposed the lack of any endeavour to formulate a strategic culture to safeguard India's national interests. This book comprises the journey of the Indian nation state and its tryst with destiny, where successive political leaderships, while governing India, contributed to a better understanding of the idea of India, its political and strategic culture, and the role that its military has had to play to develop that culture. Hence, the journey has been from the backwaters of 'defensive defence' to create a credible deterrence capacity as well as a doctrine to implement the same through political will and enter the domain of global involvement in the strategic, non-strategic as well as non-traditional areas of security. Thus, the title of the book The Purpose of India's Security Strategy: Defence, Deterrence and Global Involvement. It is hoped that this book will serve as a referral document to understand the polemics of the development of a strategic culture in India for an era which will be dominated by the information age and artificial intelligence, without forgetting that the Indian political leadership has come of age to understand the role of the military in the process of nation building.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Printing [Stated]. x, 324, [2] pages. Figures. Notes. Bibliography. Index. DJ has minor wear and soiling. The contents include: Deterrence Theory and Israeli Strategy; The Formative Years, 1949-1956; Deterrence Comes of Age: 1957-1967; The Perils of Victory: 1967-1973; In Search of a New Formula: 1974-1984; Is the Bomb Inevitable?' and A Theoretical Postscript. Avner Yaniv taught political science and international relations at the University of Haifa. An Israeli Sabra, Yaniv received his doctorate from Oxford University. He has been widely published. The author divides the book into four main parts which correspond to the stages of development in Israel's conventional deterrence strategy. Each section covers five crucial components of the deterrence strategy: force structure and capability, the manipulations articulation of threats and commitments, the role of allies, the use of force, and the domestic political backdrop. Through the Israeli example, Yaniv presents a more general definition of conventional deterrence--its limits, its dynamics, and how it is best pursued. Yaniv concluded that Israel's strategy of conventional deterrence has often been imperfect, yet quite successful in achieving its main objectives. The author believes that pressures for a nuclear posture are likely to increase unless Israel takes certain steps, which are within its power, to check this course of events.
