First Edition
Hardback. Condition: Very Good. First edition. The author, Niyazi Berkes, makes the point early on that secularization in Islamic Turkey was not a matter of, effectively, church vs. state, as it was in Western Europe, but rather, in his words, "one between the forces of traditionand the forces of change." That means "The Development of Secularization in Turkey" is in many ways a history of the last two centuries of the Ottoman Empire and the beginning of the new separate and independent state of Turkey. This is a first-edition copy of a book that has proved to be highly influential and widely taught, so much so that it gone through later editions and is still being published in various formats, more than sixty years after it first appearedquite unusual for a book of its kind. This copy is one of only 1500 printed by the Runge Press Limited of Ottowa. It appears to have been published without a dust jacket, though with a decorative cloth cover that a publisher's note on the back page says is drawn from an Ottoman textile woven in the sixteenth century. That cover is in excellent condition considering this is a first printing of a book that was published in 1964there is a bit of rubbing along the joints and top and bottom of the spine, and the slightest amount of bumping on the corners. The pages are still bright and clear and the text block is firm and tight. A bit of light soiling on the text edges. There is even a paper bookmark printed by McGill University Press specifically for this book and laid in inside the front cover. Altogether, this copy would typically be classified as "Fine"except for one major issue: A previous owner obviously used it for their own research, and used black ink to make copious marks in chapter 4. Eleven pages have underlining, and three of those pages also have annotations. (There are also some numbers on the front flysheet in less heavy ballpoint pen that seem correspond with page number in the textthe first set seems to match the chapter where the heavy markings are.) Photos are forthcoming or immediately available on request.
Condition: good. A former library book with all the expected stamps, stickers and markings. Some shelf, storage or usage wear present. The binding is tight and all pages are present. Missing dustjacket, although it's unclear if one came with the book originally. The pages appear unmarked. Pictures available upon request. Individually inspected by Shay.
