The usual suspects are here as well as the unexpected. Niccolo Machiavelli~the famed author of that most diabolical political treatise, The Prince~is here with "Belphagor," his only work of fiction. That master of the macabre, Edgar Allan Poe, contributes "Bon~Bon" and Washington Irving, the author of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," is here with "The Devil and Tom Walker," another timeless tale of Gothic Americana. J. Sheridan Le Fanu, the Victorian era's greatest writer of the supernatural and the author of "Carmilla," is represented by "Sir Dominick's Bargain," a masterful retelling of an old Irish legend. The Russian short story writer Nikolai Vasilevich Gogol is here with "St. John's Eve," a classic tale of peasant~folk bedevilment. Among the unexpected are offerings by the great English authors Charles Dickens~"The Devil and Mr. Chips"~and William Makepeace Thackeray~"The Painter's Bargain" ~who are better known for their realistic novels. This volume concludes with a story by Stephen Vincent Benet, "The Devil and Daniel Webster" a modern masterpiece of infernal soul~selling that proves Satan is alive and well in the literature of the twentieth century. Whether one believes in the Devil or not, Devilish Doings is a fun collection that will delight anyone with a yen for tales of wonder and bedevilment.

Stapled Wrappers. Condition: About Fine. First Edition Thus. First Acting Edition, First Printing. About Fine in stapled pale blue wrappers, slight toning to spine. 38pp. Q17404.
Near very good condition in a good dust jacket. The pale blue cloth boards remain clean and well-preserved, with only slight edge wear and a touch of rubbing at the spine ends. Binding tight and square; text block clean and unmarked. Endpapers show uniform toning but no writing or bookplates. The illustrated jacket (stated Third Large Printing, priced $1.00) exhibits noticeable wear along folds and extremities, including small chips at the spine ends, several short closed tears, and scattered surface rubbing; the spine panel is moderately rubbed with small losses not affecting legibility. Rear panel shows foxing and age spotting typical of this title. Farrar & Rinehart's trade edition of Stephen Vincent Benét's classic tale, illustrated throughout by Harold Denison in bold, expressive line drawings. Originally appearing in The Saturday Evening Post, "The Devil and Daniel Webster" quickly became one of the defining American literary fables of the twentieth century, blending folklore, political symbolism, and moral drama. This early reprint, produced the same year as the first trade edition (1937), retains the original layout and illustrations and remains an appealing example of Benét's enduringly popular story in its period format.

First Edition. *** GREAT ASSOCIATION COPY *** THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER, Farrar & Rinehart, 1937, first edition (third printing), very slight wear to the base of the spine and lower fore edge corner tips, else a tight near fine copy in a vg pictorial dust-wrapper with some light wear and tear and three very modest chips. Illustrated by Harold Denison. Inscribed by the author "To my friend Willard Wright -for whom even Dan was no match -S V Benet." This reference no doubt is to Willard Wright's own fictional character, Philo Vance, as Mr Wright wrote many detective novels under the pseudonym of S.S. Van Dine. Source book for the film of the same name (originally released for some strange reason as ALL THAT MONEY CAN BUY allegedly to avoid confusion with another film released by RKO that year, The Devil and Miss Jones). Walter Huston's role in this film as Scratch, aka The Devil, is precious. Especially the very last scene !!!
