Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. New York: The Dial Press, 1957. First edition. 1957 date printed to the title page, $4.95 to the jacket's flap. An historical, biographical novel of Marchioness Madeleine de Brinvilliers, wife of gambler Marquis de Brinvilliers, and lover of poisoner… artist Godin de Sainte-Croix, who turned to her own evil ways and poison after King Louis XIV imprisoned Godin. O. Henry Award and Huntington Hartford Foundation Awards winning Fifield, a professional radio script and Hollywood script writer, became a conscientious objector, then lived in Europe and France for forty years as a novelist, historian, biographer, and literary and artist interviewer. This novel was based on Fifield's research and Madeleine's own personal journals and papers. A nicely well-preserved vintage first edition gift. Minutely rubbed to the shelf-edge of the front corner tips, else square, firm and near fine in bright red waxed linen over polished black linen boards with gilt embossed titles to the spine; in a very good plus dust jacket with tiny tears and rubs to the upper and lower spine edges, rubbing to the front spine fold and front flap fold, a few small minor creases to the front panel's upper shelf-edges. The dust jacket will be placed in a clear, removable protective sleeve after scanning for this entry. Daniel Schwartz (illustrator).
