Devil's Tor expanded upon psychological and metaphysical themes found in his first work, A Voyage to Arcturus, a book which J. R. R. Tolkien himself said he read "with avidity." (Humphrey Carpenter, ed. The Letters of J. R. R. Tolkien. 1981). The plot, difficult to describe due to its breadth and scope, revolves around the uniting of two halves of a powerful talisman, and the potential apocalypse caused by that act. Barron, in his Fantasy and Horror, describes the work as "Marvelously atmospheric and admirably conscientious in its design of a hypothetical mythology and the metaphysics to go with it." A quite uncommon signed copy of arguably the magnum opus of this highly influential fantasy author. Barron, Fantasy and Horror 5-181, Bleiler 1022, Currey pg 314 (Binding A), Locke, Spectrum of Fantasy pg 140.
