Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Herman Bang. 4 Devils. NY: Grosset & Dunlap, 1928, 1st. edition, 1st. printing, x, 236 pp., publisher's catalog (x). *** This book is the first American photoplay edition published in concert with the movie of the same title filmed in 1928, starring Janet Gaynor. The film is considered lost, but the book is right here, ready to read! Classified as a "classic Danish short novella," the story was novelized by Guy Fowler. Two young brothers are orphaned, taken in by their grandmother, who promptly sells them to a circus. Ill treated, the brothers decide to form an acrobatic act with two sisters they meet in the circus. Nowadays, they would launch a virtual internet act, but back then it had to be the real thing. When the circus fires them, they form a new death-defying trapeze act, which becomes immensely popular in Europe. Then romance muddies the waters. What happens next . . . ? There are twelve (12) full-page b&w movie stills (photos) from the film plus a b&w photo frontis. With the original illustrated dust jacket (not price clipped) in a clear protective cover. This book is in my inventory and the images are of this particular item. *** Red cloth boards with black lettering on front cover and on spine. Light bump to bottom corner of front cover. Owner's name, address, and date (1/27/34) in script on front free end paper. Faint rubber stamp on title page - Dwight M. Cleveland Poster Archive. Near fine condition. Jacket has moderate wear and soil overall, slight chipping at corners and spine ends with no loss, a few short, closed tears on edges, VG. *** 7.75 inches tall by 5.25 inches.
